How my mother's fanatical views tore us apart

She's revered as a trail-blazing feminist and author Alice Walker touched the lives of a generation of women. A champion of women's rights, she has always argued that motherhood is a form of servitude. But one woman didn't buy in to Alice's beliefs - her daughter, Rebecca, 38.

Here the writer describes what it was like to grow up as the daughter of a cultural icon, and why she feels so blessed to be the sort of woman 64-year-old Alice despises - a mother.

And the Obamessiah told the crowd that he didn’t want his daughters, “punished with a baby”. (sarc)

I read this earlier, and it made my screen go fuzzy. No child should have to go through that.

God bless that young woman and her family.

Absolutely, I couldn’t agree more.

I think it is a victory when kids pull themselves together in spite of their parents.

Nature has a funny way of correcting things - I believe.

Wow. Pretty powerful indeed. Nothing new here for those of us who understand how life works, but it is shocking that Alice Walker's daughter feels this way. I would think this would be as big a story as Dick Cheney having a gay daughter.

Powerful indeed, Rebecca has achieved more personal growth and success than her and in spite of her mother....a woman to be admired

My friends father rejected his mothers radical principals to extent of escaping his country when he heard mum was on they to kill him.She felt it would be a privilege to kill him.... My friend witnessed her father on his knees every night praying for his mothers salvation....He died never having a relationship with his mother but he was a good father and husband.....and loved by many....

You would be surprised at how many do. My daughter is a nanny for a couple of big Alice Walker fans. The mother "perceives" a tension between she and I. There is no tension; she is ashamed of herself but can't admit it. I kept thinking of my daughter's boss the entire time I was reading this article. They put their children in daycare as soon as the "school" will accept the babies (there are two children). My daughter has to hold the youngest one during all his waking hours to "keep him from crying". The youngest is almost ten months old and is just starting to crawl. These children are so emotionally deprived by their activist commie parents. The good news is that my daughter is now more conservative than ever. Some people are afraid to let their children be exposed to alternate lifestyles but in this case it has been good for my daughter to see how the other side lives.

My kids were 6 before they spent the first night over at grandma's. Ex and I were very concerned about early nurturing, and consistency of corrections and expectations.

They turned out ok.

We gave up a lot to do that. No days off. Every day was a schoolday for midshipmen. ;)

I can't imagine doing anything else for my kids.

The story also shows the depths of selfishness people like her mother have.

That was my first thought, but she's married, she's got a kid, and she's got baggage. Otherwise, she's eligible. ;)
