A Levy County man accidentally shot his wife Friday morning when he tried to fend off a fox that had attacked the woman, deputies reported.
The animal was killed and will be tested for rabies due to its unusual behavior, said Levy County Sheriffs Office spokesman Lt. Evan Sullivan.
Test results wont be available until next week, but authorities are advising anyone who comes in contact with a wild animal exhibiting strange behavior to leave it alone and contact law enforcement.
Officers were called to an accidental shooting in the 3000 block of SE 18th Ave. in the Morriston area at about 10:30 a.m., the Sheriffs Office reported.
A couple at the address had spotted an unknown animal in their yard and went out to investigate, Sullivan said. But, once outside, the animal attacked the woman, biting her left leg. The woman couldnt get away from the animal and told her husband to get a gun.
The man tried to shoot the fox with a .22-caliber rifle, firing seven times. He killed the animal but also accidentally shot the woman in the lower right leg.
The fox, which was still attached to the womans leg, had to be pried off by paramedics on the scene, Sullivan said.
The woman was taken to Shands at the University of Florida and was in stable condition, Sullivan said.
The Levy County Environmental Health Department in Bronson will house the foxs body before it is turned over to a lab in Tampa for rabies testing.
The Sheriff's Office listed the fox as a red female fox, but after reviewing a picture of the animal, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it was a gray fox, which is more commonly found in the state.
No charges are pending in connection with the shooting, Sullivan said.
HEADLINE:...two super models shot by senior citizen after attack by fox. Mr Magoo swore the ladies called out for help......
Bit...
Shot...
Rabies shots...
This will be an interesting story to follow, if the paper decides to do so.
I saw my Grandad shoot a rabid fox when I was a kid.
No humans were injured L0L
/johnny
LOL
He may have had better luck using the rifle as a club.
No doubt the fox and his wife were moving around quite a bit in the struggle.
A baseball bat may have been a better choice of weapon or perhaps a shotgun (being sure to aim well away from the ladys leg). A fox having lost a good deal of its hind quarters is likely to loose consciousness.
A garden tool or some kind of club can quickly dispatch a rabid animal in such situation. Of course, I'm speaking from experience, I had an aunt that was in her garden when attacked by a rabid fox. She killed it with a garden hoe without being harmed.
Yep. Your basic fox doesn't want to hang around gnawing a woman's leg, especially while guns are going off.
I remember an old old old Dennis the Menace cartoon..
Mrs Jones, wearing her fox stole, comes to visit. Dennis answers the door and yells to his mom...
Mom! You know Mrs Jones who you always say is putting on the dog? Well, now she is wearing it!
we don’t know how accurate this story is. This might just be that biased fox news that the liberals are always whining about.
If fox news can’t get the fox news story straight we’re all doomed!
The foxes in those photos look more alive than those methed out models.
She was gonna sue her husband, but didn’t have a leg to stand on!
LOL
If I see an animal in the yard acting weird I am *not* going out there without my gun to start with! Go back and fetch it? No way. In fact, if I see a fox or a skunk in the daytime, it will probably be dead if I can get a bead on it. (the skunks are the rabid ones in this county)
fired seven shots...probably killed the fox with the first round.
Maybe his wife was a fox too.
