I have friends who give their children "experiences" - like trips and visits to attractions instead of material gifts.

Their kids seem happy and well adjusted.

I did not receive presents either from my parents except some small item. At Christmas, the family would decorate the Christmas tree with snacks, bake cookies, build a gingerbread house, and take small gifts to those who were alone in nursing homes and spent time with them. We would have a special dinner and tell Christmas stories and sing songs. I have the most wonderful memories of Christmas, and I have never thought of my parents as cheap. To us, Christmas was not about shopping and presents but had a deeper meaning.
