July 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Campaign Life Coalition Canada (CLC) is hosting and co-sponsoring the International Pro-Life Conference, "Creating a Culture of Life Around the Globe," in Toronto October 2-4 with Life Canada and the International Right to Life Federation (IRTLF). Among the many notable speakers at this major conference will be Father Gerard Wilberforce, the great, great grandson of slavery abolitionist William Wilberforce.
Jim Hughes, International Right to Life vice-president and president of Campaign Life Coalition Canada told LifeSiteNews that the conference is expected to be as exciting as the 2002 International conference with speakers from around the world. Hughes stated that headline speaker Fr. Wilberforce "will speak on how his great-great grandfather, were he alive today, would be in the forefront of the pro-life movement fighting to end abortion as he fought to end slavery."
Hughes says "Wilberforcee is one of a growing list of descendants of very prominent anti-slavers such as the current descendent of Dred Scott, upon whom was built the terrible Dred Scott case in the United States which said that black humans were only three fourths human, and also Dr. Alveda King, the niece of the late Martin Luther King Jr., who is also in the forefront of the pro-life movement. It is growing trend."
Jack Willke, president of IRLF is another prominent conference speaker. His Handbook on Abortion was the bible for the pro-life movement right from its inception. Other confirmed conference speakers are John Smeaton, director of the UK's Society for the Protection of Unborn Children; Lech and Ewa Kowalewska, directors of Human Life International Europa; Bert Dorenbos, President of Cry for Life of Holland ; Fr. Raymond de Souza, columnist with the National Post, Stephanie Gray of the Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform; Georgette Forney, co-founder of Silent No More Awareness Campaign; Dr. Sheila Harding, Associate Dean of Medical Education at the University of Saskatchewan; Fr. Alphonse deValk C.S.B., editor of Catholic Insight magazine; MPs Tom Wappel and Jeff Watson and Cale Clark, lay pastoral assistant. Additional speakers have yet to be confirmed.
Orgnanizers state the price of the conference at the Marriott Toronto Airport Hotel is $195 and that includes the Thursday reception and Friday banquet. The cost for the conference without the reception and banquet is $150. To register call CLC at (416)204-9749 or 1-800-730-5358.
A limited number of rooms are being reserved at the Marriot at a special price for conference attendees - a saving of more than $100 per room per night. Standard rooms will be $109 a night. Suites are $149, not including taxes. CLC says to quote code NLC to obtain the special rates when calling the hotel at 416-674-9400.

Interesting that William Wilberforce’s descendant is a Catholic priest.
Best wishes for the success of the conference. It looks like there will be some great speakers.

the terrible Dred Scott case in the United States which said that black humans were only three fourths humanMr. Hughes needs to go back to 9th grade American History. The Dred Scott case said that moving to a free state did not make a slave a free person. The three-fifths compromise in the Constitution involved counting slaves (not blacks, slaves) for purposes of House of Representatives districting, and was a sop to slaveholding states, not free states. Non-slave states didn't want slaves counted at all.

William Wilberforce also lobbied for universal government education.
I wonder what he would think of the godless government school monstrosity that exists today?

That is really neat! There are many similarities between the pro-life and abolitionist movements. Interesting that such viewpoints can seemingly be passed down through the generations. Oh, I forgot. That’s the way our moral values and principles used to be routinely transferred. Nice to see in some cases it’s still happens. : )

I had forgotten that, but I have a feeling that he would be appalled.

*Interesting that William Wilberforces descendant is a Catholic priest*
He had sons who were Anglican priests, one a Bishop and some joined the Oxford movement which explains the Catholic
priests in this family.

Public education is a textbook example of the law of unintended consequences in action. The people who lobbied for public education genuinely believed that it was the only way to provide the poor with the necessary tools to achieve success. I doubt that there were many people in the 19th century who could foresee what a disaster it would become.
