Fugitive 'Spam King' Found Dead With Family
InformationWeek ^ | July 24, 2008 | Thomas Claburn

Edward Davidson, the "spam king" who reportedly forced his wife to help him escape from a Colorado prison on Sunday, has killed himself, a woman, and a toddler, according to The Denver Post.

Earlier Thursday, Colorado NBC affiliate 9News.com reported that three people had been found dead in an apparent murder-suicide in the area of East Arkansas Place, near the town of Bennett, Colo.

The identities of the victims were not disclosed at the time.

Responding to an inquiry from InformationWeek, an officer with the Lakewood, Colo., police department said that he had heard that Davidson might have been involved in the incident, but that he could not confirm that.

The Denver Post and 9News.com have since reported that the victims are Davidson and his family.

An article in The Rocky Mountain News said that Davidson had forced his wife to help him leave the minimum-security federal prison in Florence, Colo., in order to return to his wife's home in Lakewood for a change of clothes.

The story said that he was last seen leaving in her 2006 silver Toyota Sequoia but did not say that anyone was with him at the time.

Reached at the crime scene, Mark Campbell, undersheriff for Arapahoe County, said he could not confirm the identities of the victims until further investigative work was done and the next of kin were notified. However, he did confirm that the vehicle at the scene is aToyota (NYSE: TM) SUV.

"At about 11:15 a.m. this morning, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 4300 block of East Arkansas Place, which is in unincorporated Arapahoe County, Colo.," said Campbell. "That is southwest of the town of Bennett, Colo.

"When deputies arrived on the scene, we did find a male adult, deceased, by the driver's door of a silver SUV," said Campbell. "We did find a female adult, deceased, by the passenger door of the SUV, and we did find a 7- to 8-month-old little boy in the back seat who appeared to be uninjured, but he was transported by rescue personnel as a precaution. Unfortunately, inside the car we also found a little girl who we believe was about 3 years old and she was deceased. We did find another victim who was shot and who managed to run to a neighbor's house. She's a teenage girl and she was transported with a gunshot wound, but she was coherent and talking to rescue personnel."

Davidson had served less than two months of his 21-month prison sentence when he escaped.

Well, I agree with you as to people who spread viruses. That's really malicious stuff. Ditto people who spread malware.

Like I said I'm ambivalent about the spammers. If this guy was disabling computers he deserved his sentence to Club Fed.

Of course, his family didn't deserve any of this.

This article, based on the teenage survivor’s statements, is quite a bit clearer. I’m still not clear on the actual departure from the prison. Did he convince her that he was allowed to leave for a while, so that she actually didn’t know she was “helping him escape”? Obviously, this prison is run as a no-security prison, not a minimun security prison, if prisoners are just having relatives come pick them up and drive them away.

Further confirmation that spammers are sociopaths. The fear, the suffering of others matters naught to them, and no one is innocent.

Horrible for the others caught up in the violence when he decided to kill himself.

I feel ambivalent about why he was in jail in the first place.

Spammers steal from everyone. While you can happily filter them out on your end, spam clogs bandwidth and overloads mail servers. They have to be upgraded regularly to keep up with the load.

Those costs are passed on to the subscribers. You pay for spam.

Absolutely. That is just horrible. What a pathetic excuse for a human being.

She was forced to help him escape.

Ken Deal, chief deputy U.S. marshal in Denver, said that hours after Davidson's escape Sunday, his wife told Lakewood police he had forced her to take him to the Denver area in the SUV.

You might be right...But how does a prisoner force someone on the outside to help them escape prison, without help from someone on the outside backing up that force?

Are you sure he had not already escaped prison by himself?

Since I have not read details about the escape, I not convinced she was forced to help him escape prison, or forced to drive him away from prison in a vehicle. How would that be possible?

This was a terrible crime, and the shooter was one very disturbed/angry individual.

Even if I did, I wouldn't buy it from a spammer. The vast majority of them are scams anyway.

It's the old embarrassment scam. If someone DOES buy Viagra from a spammer, and they never get their product, their usually too embarrassed to report it.

HEre is the story from the surviving teen. It’s a work camp type prison, they came to visit, he walked out to the car with them, shoved his wife out of the way, got in and drove.

Also, the wife called the cops and told them what happened.

This is was a real scumbag.

How can anyone be "forced" to help someone escape prison?

Color me perplexed.

Conspiracy theory coming up....

Perhaps he wasn't alone in his spam business and he had information that could implicate others. Those "others" "forced" his wife to help him escape. After the escape, those "others" could take care of him and his family before he could implicate them in the whole scheme. All they, the "others", had to do was to make it seem like a murder/suicide.
