Sources say the White House has tentatively signed off on a package of five judicial nominees proposed by Pennsylvania Sens. Arlen Specter and Robert Casey that would fill all of the vacancies on the Eastern District of Pennsylvania bench and one of two openings on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
If the deal goes through, the White House will first withdraw the nomination of Eastern District Judge Gene E.K. Pratter to the 3rd Circuit, replacing her with Eastern District Judge Paul S. Diamond.
Pratter's nomination had been met with significant opposition and was ultimately doomed when Casey refused to sign off on it.
Diamond's expected elevation would create a fourth vacancy on the Eastern District bench in addition to the three vacancies created earlier this year when Judges James T. Giles, John R. Padova and Bruce W. Kauffman took senior status.
Sources said nominees for all four vacancies will be named on the same day that Diamond is nominated to the 3rd Circuit.
According to several sources, the four nominees will be Philadelphia Common Pleas President Judge C. Darnell Jones II; Reed Smith attorney Carolyn P. Short; criminal defense attorney Joel H. Slomsky; and Bucks County Common Pleas Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg.
Lawyers familiar with the nomination process disagreed when asked about the chances that the entire package of nominees will win confirmation in a presidential-election year.

I don’t know what to think of all this, given the mixed parties involved. Some feedback from a Pennsylvania Freeper would be helpful.
Smooth or brit, can you shed any light for post 2.
I don’t trust Specter, don’t know about Casey.
Well, there’s some compromise package for appointments on Federal courts in Pennsylvania (both Circuit and District), and a controversial nominee (Gene Pratter) for a Circuit judgeship was withdrawn and replaced with a less controversial one (Paul Diamond). It was worked out by the state’s two Senators (a RINO and a pro-life Democrat), and the White House has tentatively signed off on it.
I was hoping that a Pennsylvanian could check the link and add his or her input on it. How bad is this compromise (is it OK or a sell out)?
I don’t trust ‘rat Casey or super-RINO Specter.
I was thinking one of them might help shed some light, they’re pretty savvy.
W may be figuring if he can slide through a couple of judges he wants, this is the price he has to pay.
But like I said, I'm just guessing.
Thanks, Smooth. That sounds reasonable to me and I didn’t have the foggiest. From what I’ve heard there’s a lot of thugs around Philly. :)
Eastern District Judge Gene E.K. Pratter Sorry to say I have no other info other than as listed in the article Cf posted. I do know that Fast Eddie Rendell's wife is also on the court serving with Pratter; Specter was and to my mind is still a Democrat; and as most know the Estern PA judicial system is rife with favouritism and collusion. If Casey and Leahey are against her, though, it lends credence to her bonafides.
Thanks, brit. I couldn’t agree more with you on Specter.
Ping to you, Trib.
Do you have any info about this for the rest of the gang, or have a source for more info? Thanks.
ping
No doubt about it, and let us not forget, Spector is an old Philly operative, cut his teeth there.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania would be a far better place if we could just give Philly to New Jersey and be done with that cesspool.
A lot of letters to the editor for the last 2 months of the Dem primary season really went after him for supporting pro abort Obama. Very few people even know about his Senate vote(which I think pertained to paying for abortions overseas).
If we did that, the IQ of both states would be vastly improved!
Casey endorses pro-abortion Obama. He is no longer pro-life.
I agree.
If you go back thru all of Bush's judicial nominations(confirmed and un-confirmed) that drew strong opposition from the Senate dems, it was because they were federalists. Since they now control the Senate, the dems will not confirm a feddie, and this includes any McCain nominee.
The dem conspiracy theory is that the GOP and the Federalist Society(cornerstone of the VRWC) are using the FTAs to roll back the New Deal.
First, the GOP would use the FTAs to spread the Investor Protections thru-out the hemisphere which would create two sets of regulatory law. Second, a SCOTUS with 5 Federalists would find a trade dispute case to hear and would rule that most all US regulatory law, including most of the New Deal, to be unconstitutional.

If you have any doubts about how widely this is accepted among democrats, do a google exact phrase search of the article title. It is even being taught as a college course.
“The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania would be a far better place if we could just give Philly to New Jersey “
But what would become of New Jersey?
