WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

Silly name IMO but it should be a parents decision. The kids can change them when grown if they want.

The name a child is given reflects on their upbringing and the temperament and intelligence of the parents and is a pretty good predictor of future success. Now, I know that’s not a PC opinion, but sometimes the truth is not PC and it is borne out in actual experience.

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

The kid didn't want the name so I'm happy the judge stepped in.

If the parents were such good parents they wouldn't have committed an act of child abuse by giving her a name like that and they wouldn't be in divorce/custody court.

People need to learn. While it’s not advisable it is at least acceptable to conceive children while drunk or stoned or whatever. Naming them that way though is just plain wrong.

My brother in law’s last name is “Fall”. He wanted to name his duaghter “Chrystal Blue Water” Fall. I told him he was an idiot. Kids have enough problems growing up without giving them something else to try to overcome.

My granddaughter's name is Sarah. She's 7 and would like to change her name to something that sounds like Finiona. My middle name is my mother's. I hated it, growing up. I'm figuring that since she is Hawaiian that it was significant to the parents. Most likely when the girl is grown she will want what was given to her back. Government needs to stay out of this. I wonder if the kid complained or was asked if she liked her name.

In France until 1958, when you went to register a child’s birth there was a list of approved first names you could choose from in the registry office. Only those approved names could be given to the child.

This was to help eliminate the effect of regionalism and regional dialects. So for example, those living close to the Spanish border could not name a son ‘Juan,’ but would be required to name him ‘Jean.’

“I wonder if the kid complained or was asked if she liked her name.”

From the article...

“The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her “K” instead, the girl’s lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.”

The only thing that's really strange here is the idea that a judge should be naming the kids.

Gad, just what is this world coming to?

I realize this isn't the US but do we really want government making decisions for all parents because of a few mavericks?

That is disgraceful! Anyone with the last name of Fall should have sense enough to name his daughter Theriseand.

______

I’ve known my fair share of stoners and drunks over the years, many of whom have had children, none of them named so stupidly.

This was not a case of beer/reefer, there is something much more deeply wrong with the parents, naming a child seemingly in order that she be humiliated.
