An alleged gang member accused of triple murder in the slayings of a San Francisco father and two sons pleaded not guilty Wednesday at a hearing in which the judge refused to issue a blanket gag order in the high-profile case.
Edwin Ramos, 21, is accused of the June 22 shooting deaths of Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16, ....... Ramos spoke softly and slowly in denying each of the allegations.
The defense sought the gag order after The Chronicle revealed that Ramos was an illegal immigrant who was found to have committed two felonies at age 17 - a gang-related assault of a Muni passenger and the attempted robbery of a pregnant woman - but was not surrendered by San Francisco juvenile justice authorities to federal officials for possible deportation.
The report has triggered outrage on local and national talk shows, and Danielle Bologna said city officials "need to take responsibility" for actions that she says led to the killings of her husband and sons.
Ramos' attorney, Robert Amparan, told the court Wednesday the case was fast "becoming national media fodder" and said he was concerned about an atmosphere of "vigilantism."
He said his office has received threatening calls and that he was concerned about comments posted by readers on The Chronicle's Web site, SFGate.
According to Tim Counts, spokesman for ICE, the only communication his agency received about Ramos came by way of the electronic request at 3:44 a.m. April 2, nearly two hours after Ramos was released. He said there is no record that ICE received any fax from the Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's deputies queried the agency by phone April 1 about the man arrested with Ramos, Erick Lopez, and an immigration hold was placed on him, Counts said.

Why, Edwin is a hard working undocumented immigrant, seeking a better life for himself. He’s one of God’s children and I’m sure he holds family values similar to our own. The only humane and compassionate thing to do would be to apologize and provide a large cash settlement to make up for our xenophobia and the vigilantees who dragged him from the shadows into the harsh glare of American racism.
Agree entirely. If criminals do not see justice meted out, they will become more brazen, as we have been withness to over the years.
I would like to know why the federal government cannot classify gangs as terrorist organizations? Oh, my bad, the federal government doesn’t do anything to protect it’s citizens.
To liberals such murders are not nearly as serious or as evil as turning over an illegal for deportation. Illegals kind of get the idea that crime is a privilege of illegals.
They are not dolts, necessarily. They are often honors graduates of Critical Legal Studies courses which all take in law school now. These courses are training in how to use the law to overthrow Constitutional society. It was relatively harmless until some of the Crit grads started getting elected and appointed to the bench.
Absurd
It is not unusual to read or hear in the news of car wrecks and deaths caused by Coyotes driving SUV’s and Vans overloaded with illegals trying to out run the law.
As much as I want to blame San Fransickos politicians the fault still lies with the pathetic voters.
Politicians in our bigger cities are just a reflection of the voters.
I hope this woman sues and wins a hell of a big judgment.
It would be nice if someone or group would take the politicians and give them an attitude adjustment.

This story is the first thing I thought of when I heard about the triple murder in San Francisco.
Nice to hear they are not forgotten-—the visciousness and needlessness of this crime is mind-boggling.
Nonsense. SF is a big enough town these days that it can see to public safety. Why they don’t is what makes it unsafe.
What is nonsense is to say it is not safe to travel here. Absolutely absurd.
They’re not forgotten, Liz, at least not by me. I grew up in an Essex County town that borders Newark, childhood memories of Branch Brook Park when the cherry blossoms bloomed. My Dad worked in Newark for 30+ years, I worked in Newark back in the late 70s to mid 80’s. A senseless brutal triple murder a year ago and now another senseless brutal triple murder. Where does it end?
Yup, it's safe.
Do you live in San Jose perhaps? They think San Fran is safe because the only time they go there is to use the airport, and it's pretty safe in your car (relatively speaking).
It's not like Fairfax County VA, though ~ we have a very low crime rate.
Just amazing.

Yes, it is time to fight back against the invasion. How tragic that both Obama and McCain support it.
We take the kids to the zoo every other Saturday, never had a problem, what is the problem on Sundays you suggest.
