The area north of the Arctic Circle has an estimated 90 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and 1,670 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable natural gas, the U.S. Geological Survey announced Wednesday.

The Arctic accounts for about 13 percent of the world's undiscovered oil and 30 percent of the undiscovered natural gas, the USGS reported.

The three provinces of West Siberian Basin, the East Barents Basins and Arctic Alaska are said to hold more than 70 percent of the undiscovered natural gas.

Between Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, & frozen Methan Hydrate on the Ocean floor; GOD made sure we had enough fossil based energy for 1,000 years for his creation to grow beyond the need for it.

but, but, but the Russians just staked claim to the Arctic Ocean!

11 months ago: An operator of Russian mini-submarine plants a titanium capsule with the Russian flag during a record dive in the Arctic Ocean under the ice at the North Pole, in this image made from Russian television broadcast on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007. Russian scientists traveled to the seabed beneath the North Pole in a mini-sub and planted a titanium capsule with the Russian flag, symbolically claiming much of the Arctic Ocean floor for Moscow.

...13 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30 percent of the undiscovered natural gas...

If it hasn’t been discovered, how can we know for sure that it even exists?

Won’t do us any good...Queen Nancy says it’s a tourist attraction and, hence, off limits.

The Russians called dibs on half of it.

President Vladimir Putin has already described the urgent need for Russia to secure its "strategic, economic, scientific and defence interests" in the Arctic. Moscow argued before a UN commission in 2001 that waters off its northern coast were in fact an extension of its maritime territory. The claim was based on the argument that an underwater feature, known as the Lomonosov Ridge, was an extension of its continental territory, but it was rejected and Russia told to resubmit with more evidence. Several countries with territories bordering the Arctic - including Russia, the US, Canada and Denmark - have launched competing claims to the region. The competition has intensified as melting polar ice caps have opened up the possibility of new shipping routes in the region. Current laws grant countries an economic zone of 200 nautical miles beyond their land borders. This zone can be extended where a country can prove that the structure of the continental shelf is similar to the geological structure within its territory. The North Pole is not currently regarded as part of any single country's territory and is therefore administered by the International Seabed Authority.

RUSSIA'S ARCTIC CLAIM 1) North Pole: Russia plans to leave its flag on the seabed, 4km beneath the surface, as part of its claims for oil and gas reserves 2) Lomonosov Ridge: Russia argues that this underwater feature is an extension of its continental territory and is looking for evidence 3) 200-mile line: Shows how far countries' agreed economic area extends beyond their coastline. Often set from outlying islands 4) Russian claimed territory: The bid to claim a vast area is being closely watched by other countries. Some could follow suit

I agree. McCain should select Palin for VEEP, which would put the Drill Here/Drill Now issue front-and-center for the election.

We can beat the Donks like a drum on National Security and Energy Policy. We should do everything we can to make sure that these are the primary focus this Fall.

The Donks cannot help but continue to attack John McCain on National Security, because they are so wedded to defeat in the WOT. Similarly, they would not be able to resist kow-towing to their fringe base if Sarah Palin starts talking about exploiting Alaskan oil.

My husband the “libertarian” said if they drill, he will never vote Republican or conservative again.”

Hell, let the Russkies have the Arctic Ocean floor North of their territory. We and the Canadians should claim our share too. This benefits the Danes (Greenland), Norskis, and Finns too.

And yet the GOP has a presidential candidate that refuses to allow drilling there.

We need a fight during the GOP convention to get a real conservative who really represents Americans.

Mine was a Democrat ( Not the loony kind, google Orson Scott Card for a close approximation. ) until the 2004 election, and you ought to hear her cuss her former party every time we gas up the family vehicles. And we have a nuclear plant two cities west of here, and she keeps asking "why haven't we been building more of those since the Arab Oil Embargo..."

I’m almost to the point to say let them have it.

Much more likely the resources will be produced and sold on the world market under them than under the control of the US or the UN.
