HANWANG, China The official came for Yu Tingyun in his village one evening last week. He asked Mr. Yu to get into his car. He was clutching the contract and a pen.
Mr. Yus daughter had died in a cascade of concrete and bricks, one of at least 240 students at a high school here who lost their lives in the May 12 earthquake. Mr. Yu became a leader of grieving parents demanding to know if the school, like so many others, had crumbled because of poor construction.
The contract had been thrust in Mr. Yus face during a long police interrogation the day before. In exchange for his silence and for affirming that the ruling Communist Party mobilized society to help us, he would get a cash payment and a pension.
Mr. Yu had resisted then. This time, he took the pen.
When I saw that most of the parents had signed it, I signed it myself, Mr. Yu said softly. A wiry 42-year-old driver, he carries a framed portrait of his daughter, Yang, in his shoulder bag.
Local governments in southwest Chinas quake-ravaged Sichuan Province have begun a coordinated campaign to buy the silence of angry parents whose children died during the earthquake

Pei-ping.
In before the ChiCom trolls and their FR apologists poison this thread with their PLA-directed propaganda.
It looks to me like the “hush” money hasn’t actually worked.
Brings back memories of 9/11, except we paid survivors $1 million.
Not like they had much of choice. No hope of suing when everything is stacked against you and you could go to jail for blaming the “system” (corrupt communists).
—Pinging the newest ChiCom troll on FR. This one claims that there is more freedom today in China than Canada (!!!) and China is better than America in the 60s.—
Before running about like some sort of Chicken Little, Indcon, address these simple facts:
1. The average tax rate in Canada is what—about 40%? The average tax in China is less than 10%. Does economic freedom count for nothing?
2. Do not both countries put people on trial for their political speech? Canada won’t allow you to criticize Islamic savages, speak out against homosexuality or “abortion rights.”
3. I also suggested that there is more freedom in China today than there was in the U.S. South in the years up to the Civil Rights movement. Care to comment?
It’s really easy to call people “ChiCom troll.” But, as your posts illustrate, it’s much harder to think and analyze.
It was really tacky and telling for you people to ban Iraqi Athletes from the Olympics.
By their fruits, a man shall know them.
“its much harder to think and analyze”
That’s right. Is that why you support genocide and forced abortion by the ChiComs? Not only do you support such inhuman practices, you also make excuses for them on this forum.
Tell us the truth - you are “BJungNan” aren’t you?
From time to time I’m simply going to call you “liar” and leave it at that. (The lies you tell are that I’ve defended genocide or that I’m some other person from your troubled past.)
LOL...I’ve been posting here for almost 4 years, troll. I have many FRiends here and have been active for a while and have been involved in personally unmasking Islamic terrorism in the US, protesting Fred Phelps early on, and fighting ChiCom trolls like you, among other things.
What have you done - besides being a forced abortion cheerleader and a ChiCom propagandist?
Do you really think I care about what a troll like you thinks of me?
“Do you really think I care about what a troll like you thinks of me?”
And yet you responded so quickly! Why, I feel I’m becoming a very important person in your life!
I feel for you as I would feel for any deluded buffoon. I am even hopeful we can set you straight here, ChiCom troll.
