I agree with you, but look at Zimbabwe for instance. Things can get worse and still “function”.

I agree that things can get worse and still *function*.

While I myself have used Zim as an example, it is hyperbole in comparison with the USA. I do not believe we would, as an armed society, a First World power and a republic, descend to state sanctioned ethnic cleansing and rule by a strongman dictator intent on raping the nation of its commodities, such as platinium, as is the case in Zimbabwe.

The majority of Americans, IMO, will not stand for hyperinflation. We would have Congressional gridlock, first, with even many of the fiscally conservative donks allying with the GOP.

OTOH, most Americans have no means of being self sufficient and no skills in doing so. It would be a huge mess, to understate the problem considerably. The outcry would be huge and prolonged, forcing Congress to enact real programs that make a difference in reality.

I do think we should all be prepared for various worst cases, however. This response will vary by location and situation. Weathering the economic storm could become of paramount importance.

“most Americans have no means of being self sufficient and no skills in doing so.”

Agreed. That is also when the riots would start. Those that don’t have the essentials will try to take them away from those who do. Be armed.

If this is Cantwell’s true intentions, what was this all about in April – calling for the Justice Dept. to investigate possible market manipulation.

Clearly partisan politics.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV's "Money and Politics" last night, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., explained Democrats don't want to increase supplies of oil and gasoline because they want to wean Americans off of petroleum products.

How about we wean the Democrats off Congress?

I'm sure the Alternative Energy folks would LOVE to keep gas prices high, thinking that they can force Americans out of their cars. They'll find out that folks, even those who might SAY they are interested in alternatives, won't care much for being FORCED to accept them by high gas prices.

Well, I guess the siamese twins separated at birth theory doesn’t hold water, either.

People need to start realizing that petroleum products are much more than gasoline

Yep. Plastic bags, computers, clothing, even makeup - they all use petroleum products in one form or another.

If Cantwell gets her wish, our standard of living will be reduced to third-world status.

They will just give them more of our tax money, more wealth transfer...that'll be an interesting tightrope walk - after openly resisting more drilling to help lower oil prices and in fact coming out and publicly saying that higher prices are desirable, they'll try to buy off millions who by then will probably be pretty pi$$ed off at them with a little of their own tax money - sort of another 'rat "put ice on it" moment.....
