Citing a lack of interest, the Nevada Republican Party has called off its state convention and will instead pick its delegates to the national convention by private conference call.
The state party broke up its original convention in April when supporters of Ron Paul hijacked the proceedings and tried to elect delegates for their candidate to the national GOP convention in September. Party officials tried to reconvene on July 26, but they needed a quorum of 675 and received only 300 RSVPs, according to local reports.
With so many people concerned about the economy, it simply wouldnt be fair for us to ask delegates from all over the state to spend money to attend a convention if we know that a quorum wont be present, state party Chairwoman Sue Lowden said in a release.
The news provides further evidence of a fractured and unenthusiastic Republican Party in some parts of the country. Last week, the GOP nominee in a North Carolina congressional race suspended his campaign while he confronted fissures in his own party. Polling suggests a significant enthusiasm gap on the part of Republican voters this year, which has left the partys candidate, Sen. John McCain, trailing Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama in the presidential contest.

paultards strike again.
I wonder from a show of hands how many of the Ron Paul supporters who are infiltrating these conventions are 9-11 Truthers.
Uh, I guess that's me. And I'm sure not a "paultard".
The PaulBots are a serious threat to throw Nevada to The One.
It’s not a minor problem here. We are a fairly libertarian state and much of the GOP are the ‘leave me alone’ variety and McCain ain’t no celebrity here. But not voting or voting for Bob Barr is going to happen a lot more than McCain would like to believe.
Only polls showing Obama doing great in NV could convince the PaulBots to bite the bullet and rejoin the GOP to stop The One.
How many of you Nevada Republicans are going to attend? The “Yawn” hear round the world.
The RP is in a serious world of hurt right now. They may get their candidate elected, but the party can’t be happy with the position it’s in right now.
They call me for donations and I practically grab the caller by the throat and pull their spine through the phone.
Objectively, McCain will probably lose, Nevada aside.
With a multi-election horizon, are not limited government types better off voting with loser Barr rather than with loser McCain?
They’re just trying to reduce their “carbon footprint” to save the planet and all the children...[/idiocy]
Cancelled due to lack of interest. Gee, I can’t imagine why...
Operation chaos is working.
If it were obvious McCain could not win, I’d be happy to lodge a protest vote for Fred Thompson, Ronald Reagan or Bobby Jindal.
But we aren’t going to be seeing that scenario, most likely.
McCain should be nowhere even remotely close to Obama considering the playing field, the media love affair and McCains completely unattractiveness to the GOP base. But realize that Obama is a theoretical candidate who can’t get to 50% even in the national polls which are the least meaningful. That is a huge red flag. It isn’t over yet (although McCain can still do a lot to make sure Republicans don’t want to support him even with a clothespin on their nose).
Seriously though, it's going to be “F’ it! - McCain” for most Republicans, former, current, and disenfranchised.
If McCain wants to rally the troops ahead of time, he'll do whatever he can to get Jindal as VP.
No matter what he does, the media will continue their 90% coverage of Obama through the entire election cycle.
Barr has totally went off the reservation.
Not canceled due to lack of interest :) Part of the story is missing.
Terhune seeks to halt state GOP from appointing delegates
The 20-page lawsuit filed by Ron Paul supporter Wayne Terhune late Friday is seeking an injunction to keep the Nevada Republican Party from appointing delegates to the national convention during a conference call later this week. Joining Terhune are 26 other plaintiffs, including congressional candidate James Smack and Assembly candidate Mike Weber.
The complaint accuses the party of mismanaging the April 26 state convention and seeking to usurp the delegates’ right to elect a slate to the national convention in Minneapolis. It also criticizes state Sen. Bob Beers, the original convention chair, calling him “clearly not neutral” and “clearly unqualified.”
Terhune accuses the party of acting “intentionally to bring this about once they realized the results of the voting...would not go as (they) planned.”
“At very least, defendants acted with reckless disregard for established law and rules,” the lawsuit states.
Named in the suit are the Nevada Republican Party, the executive committee, Beers, executive director Zachary Moyle, party chairwoman Sue Lowden and convention secretary Carol DelCarlo.
Washoe District Judge Jerry Polaha will hear the complaint.

Bob Barr was protesting the Vietnam War in 1967 while a student at USC. John McCain was beginning 5 1/2 years as a guest of the North Vietnamese.
Barr has been married three times, McCain twice, while the Messiah will probably grow old with Michelle-my-belle.
It’s a tough choice, but I don’t think I’ll ever vote for Barr (or Obama).
Very interesting. I also went to the link for the article, and read down to the many posts below the article.
Some of those comments were *extremely* interesting.
Presidents don’t do redistricting in Georgia.
As for the dumb Netroots visit, was that comparable to Saint John McCain’s attendance at the La Raza and NAACP conventions?
Get a perspective, unless, of course like Sen. McCain, you think ideas bad, racism good.
Hmmm
