ABC NEWS' NATALIE GEWARGIS REPORTS:
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, cant seem to make any stops along his whirlwind tour without a press parade following him.
But if youve only read Iraq's papers Tuesday morning, you wouldnt even know the presumptive nominee was there.
With the exception of one paper, Asharq Al-Awsat, a widely read Saudi publication, most local and regional papers seemed decidedly under-whelmed by the candidates visit.
Local issues dominated the headlines, including news of increasing typhoid outbreaks, a full Iraqi cabinet meeting (for the first time in about a year), and a story about the frequency of Iraqi visits to a local Baghdad park, among others.
On Tuesday, the newspaper Al Mashriq continued to report on the death of Husam al-Shakti, the son of Hamid Hummud al-Shakti, the governor of Iraq's Salaheddin province. Al-Shaktis son was shot by Coalition Forces Sunday during a raid on the familys home in the town of Beiji.
In addition to security developments, most Iraqi papers track the activities of Iraqs Council of Ministers and the Iraqi parliament on a daily basis. Other issues that elicit frequent coverage include the occurrence of power blackouts and a daunting fuel crisis, and water shortage.
Given all thats occurring (and making the news) in Iraq, it seems that the majority of Iraqis think that the junior senator from Illinois is just a senator from Illinois.
And while Obama's camp may sometime seem a little too ready for their "Mission Accomplished" moment, Iraqis seem less apt to jump the gun.
It seems that a majority of leftwing US wankers think that the junior senator from Illinois is just the messiah.
Seriously, though, living in a country just emerging from a war would give me a different perspective than worrying about foreign elections.
The MSM will report that Obama’s photo op in the Middle East has brought peace and love to the troubled region, ending thousands of years of hatred and strife. Now all we need to do is elect him!! Al Gore has taught us that any story can be sold if it’s packaged properly.
It may be that in an unsophisticated country such as Iraq the journalists have some silly misconception that they are there to report the news instead of to try to run their country by creating it. They’ll come around.
Guess the follow up question should be what has the reporting been like when non-godlike americans of political import visit?
Obama Akhbar......er maybe not so much.
It sounds like obama didn’t make much headway in his quest for world leader.
One thing is for sure: Katie Couric won't be hosting a show to give Barry a very public colonoscopy like Katie did on TV a while back. None of the drive-by's want to examine Barry's past, they just want to help him polish his aura.
“Sounds like the press coverage is proportional to his importance”
Thought it was that the low press coverage was contrary to his high impotence.
