Aides Try to Cast Obama as Presidential... Overseas Trip Shifts to Campaign Event
FOX News ^ | 2008-07-22 | Fox News

Now that Barack Obama has left Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was part of a congressional delegation, and is visiting the Middle East and Europe as a presidential candidate, most everything he does is being viewed through the prism of the race for the White House.

Heading to Berlin later in the week, Obama will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and others. He is set to give a speech Thursday near the historic Brandenburg Gate, where Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy all spoke. Obama’s speech could be delivered before tens of thousands of people.

Advisers describe the address as a non-campaign rally speech, but the historical allusions have not been lost on the public, and advisers could not say whether footage of the event would be used in a campaign commercial.

“It is not going to be a political speech,” said a senior foreign policy adviser, who spoke to reporters on background. “When the president of the United States goes and gives a speech, it is not a political speech or a political rally.”

That answer prompted a reporter to remind the adviser: "But he is not president of the United States.”

“It will not be a speech about campaign issues,” an adviser said. “He’s not going to address campaign issues in terms of other candidates, it is not a speech about American politics, and so it’s not a campaign event. We’re not trying to recruit support from the crowds that are coming. It’s not a campaign event.....

They don’t want the campaign to have to pay for the trip with campaign funds. So they must hold the line and insist it’s not a campaign trip.

Meanwhile, JF’nKerry is on Fox taking credit for the progress made in Iraq. It is all due to the Democrats voting for a timetable for surrender....unbelievable! And David Asman, the interviewer, didn’t have the moxey to ask him why Dingy Harry Reid declared, “We have lost the war in Iraq” if the Democrats thought they had won it with their white-flag bills of surrender. Because of the dense media types, they can get away with this incredible double-speak that would make George Orwell smile at his prescience.
This campaign is looking more and more like Alice’s upside-down Looking Glass world.

AMMAN, Jordan – Democrat Barack Obama’s entire traveling campaign apparatus is in place. He will speak Thursday at an historic site in Berlin that could draw tens of thousands of spectators. And chief campaign strategist David Axelrod might even assemble film crews to gather footage of it, possibly for a TV commercial. (cont.)

The last time we elected someone like this, they gave away the Panama Canal and nearly ruined the economy. On the positive side, after that disaster came President Reagan.

At best, the fallout from Obama’s pretend presidential tour will tell us a lot about the state of the world. If we’re at the point where most Americans aren’t disgusted by a presidential candidate holding rallies abroad in this manner, then the academics might be right: we’re moving into in a post-state world.

I can’t believe that this loser from nowhere, living out of a suitcase, still trying to establish his own paternity...is being feted by the King and Queen of Jordan. The whole world is conspiring to create a megalomaniac. By this point, Barack probably believes he walks on water. Either he is headed for a huge emotional crash, or WE ARE!

He's just a junior senator (mostly absentee)from Illinois. Other than speaking for the citizens of Mafiaville, what can he possibly have to say to the Germans? The more I think about it the more obviously presumptuous this speech becomes.

Aides suggested the speech would not target Republican John McCain, but might draw contrasts with President Bush’s policies.

Really looking forward to a sitting Senator making a speech in Germany, bashing President Bush during a time of war. Will his insults be subtle or overt?

No kidding they’re trying to cast him as Presidential. That was the whole purpose of this trip. Obama has no experience in foreign policy, except to be wrong about the surge.

“JF’nKerry is on Fox taking credit for the progress made in Iraq.”

He was for the surge before he was against it. Kerry has recast himself so many times, I’m not sure which of the John Kerry’s we are dealing with.

This Obama World tour is going to bomb big time. Most people are off enjoying the summer, and not paying attention. And those that are paying attention aren’t going to be impressed by what they’re seeing.
