WASHINGTON -- Former Gov. Edwin Edwards and former Insurance Commissioner Jim Brown are among the more than 2,000 people convicted of federal crimes awaiting word on whether President Bush will give them a pardon or commute their sentences during his final months in office.

Edwards, who turns 81 on Aug. 7, will be eligible for release from the Federal Detention Center in Oakdale on July 6, 2011. He's serving a 10-year sentence for corrupting the state's riverboat casino licensing process.

"I'm hopeful," said former Gov. David Treen, who joined former U.S. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston in filing the request on Edwards' behalf in 2007 and has argued that there is no rational basis for keeping Edwards in prison any longer.

Yes, the IS a “rational basis for keeping him in jail”.

EEE is the epitome of “corrupt LA politician”. He needs to complete his entire sentence as an example to all the others.

If he’s pardoned, he’ll probably end up being the Governor again.

Nope.
No pardon for Duke.

He traded on his service long enough, and a corrupt politician is the WORST kind of criminal.

He took an oath to support The Constitution, and then violated that oath for money.
That’s akin to TREASON.

Let any corrupt politicial ROT.

Edwin Edwards cannot possibly serve enough years to make up for every crooked thing he’s done and tried to do. That said, the problem is that he had the continued, wholehearted support and endorsement of two-thirds of Louisiana’s voting population. I agree with the statement above that he’d probably get elected again. Damn shame.

I hope President Bush goes out in extreme difference to Clinton by saying “No pardons. You did the crime, do your time”.

Pardon these politicians who abused the people's trust? NO, President Bush. Pardon the two languishing in a Texas prison for doing their jobs - (Jose Compean & Ignacio Ramos)

TAKE ACTION!

I would love for them to label him as Edwards, Democrat from Louisiana. Edwards is the poster child for one party rule.

I fled my home state of Louisiana because of Edwards and the idiots who kept voting him into office.

Let him rot in jail, and let the revolution continue in Louisiana.

Edwards still has WAY too many friends in Baton Rouge for my comfort.

I hope he rots in jail.

Not just in Baton Rouge. Whenever EEE would travel out to Vegas for his "fact finding" trips, he'd take his personal bodyguard.

Jefferson Parrish Sheriff Harry Lee.

Bobby Jindal has his work cut out for him. The Louisiana state government has been completely corrupt since at least the time of the Longs.
