One of the big topics of the day on the cable news channels is Drudge Report's story about the New York Times rejecting Sen. John McCain's proposed Op-Ed about Iraq. Fox News has Carl Cameron reporting the story, MSNBC's Chris Matthews talked about it on Hardball and Howard Kurtz gave his take last hour on CNN: "One irony of the internet age: the rejected piece will probably wind up getting far more attention by the controversy whipped up by Matt Drudge then if the New York Times had just gone ahead and published it," said Kurtz.
We hear prime time programs are gearing up for more on the story, with Hannity & Colmes, Larry King Live (with Glenn Beck filling in), Campbell Brown: Election Center and Anderson Cooper 360 set to cover it.

We have another presidential candidate besides Obama?
Why didn’t someone tell me this?
The NYTimes never seems to get tired of making fools of themselves. At first, I was angry at them for their lame excuses for not publishing McCain’s opinion, but now I’m having a good chuckle as the rest of the media are circling like hungry sharks smelling blood in the water.
Google News is not showing a thing on all of this....hmmmm!

Which god did he please to get the Times to do him this favor, I wonder. Remember when they endorsed him in January and he very stupidly touted it on his website, only to quietly drop it when he realized the Republican base doesnt consider the NYTs imprimatur a badge of honor? This is the antithesis. Youre a real conservative at last, Maverick!
An editorial written by Republican presidential hopeful McCain has been rejected by the NEW YORK TIMES less than a week after the paper published an essay written by Obama, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
The papers decision to refuse McCains direct rebuttal to Obamas My Plan for Iraq has ignited explosive charges of media bias in top Republican circles
[Former Clinton aide and current NYT op-ed editor David] Shipley, who is on vacation this week, explained his decision not to run the editorial [in an e-mail to McCains staff on Friday].
The Obama piece worked for me because it offered new information (it appeared before his speech); while Senator Obama discussed Senator McCain, he also went into detail about his own plans.
Shipley continues: It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obamas piece. To that end, the article would have to articulate, in concrete terms, how Senator McCain defines victory in Iraq.
Drudge has the text of the rejected draft. The punchline? Its true, the piece is short on specifics (and long on rubbing the lefts face in their misjudgment of the surge) but then so was Obamas op-ed, never delving beyond the Iraq/Afghanistan boilerplate hes been pushing for the last year except insofar as he revealed the number of brigades to be redeployed. As for McCains non-definition of victory, quote:
Senator Obama is also misleading on the Iraqi militarys readiness. The Iraqi Army will be equipped and trained by the middle of next year, but this does not, as Senator Obama suggests, mean that they will then be ready to secure their country without a good deal of help. The Iraqi Air Force, for one, still lags behind, and no modern army can operate without air cover. The Iraqis are also still learning how to conduct planning, logistics, command and control, communications, and other complicated functions needed to support frontline troops.
No one favors a permanent U.S. presence, as Senator Obama charges. A partial withdrawal has already occurred with the departure of five surge brigades, and more withdrawals can take place as the security situation improves. As we draw down in Iraq, we can beef up our presence on other battlefields, such as Afghanistan, without fear of leaving a failed state behind. I have said that I expect to welcome home most of our troops from Iraq by the end of my first term in office, in 2013.
Vague, but then so was Obamas caveat in his op-ed about tactical readjustments to his timetable based on conditions on the ground. What exactly are they looking for by way of specifics? Well go home when Sadrs dead? The more capable the IA is in defending its turf, the more American troops can be redeployed. I dont know what they want beyond that. But if thats not good enough, how about this for a compromise: McCain will offer a precise, legalistic definition of victory in return for Obama offering a precise, legalistic definition of defeat. Are we already there? If so, say so, because that sure would put Obamas supposed meeting of the minds with Maliki in stark, stark context.
And to think, 49% believe the medias trying to help Obama win. Exit question: Since when does Drudge do favors for McCain? Or was a hot story bashing the Times simply too much for him to resist, whatever the political fallout might be?

Subject: Re: JSM Op-Ed
Dear Mr. XXXXXX,
Thank you for sending me Senator McCains essay.
Id be very eager to publish the Senator on the Op-Ed page.
However, Im not going to be able to accept this piece as currently written.
Id be pleased, though, to look at another draft.
Let me suggest an approach.
The Obama piece worked for me because it offered new information (it appeared before his speech); while Senator Obama discussed Senator McCain, he also went into detail about his own plans.
It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obamas piece. To that end, the article would have to articulate, in concrete terms, how Senator McCain defines victory in Iraq. It would also have to lay out a clear plan for achieving victory with troops levels, timetables and measures for compelling the Iraqis to cooperate. And
it would need to describe the Senators Afghanistan strategy, spelling out how it meshes with his Iraq plan.
I am going to be out of the office next week. If you decide to re-work the draft, please be in touch with Mary Duenwald, the Op-Ed deputy. Her email is XXXXXXXX; her phone is 212-XXXXXXX.
Again, thank you for taking the time to send me the Senators draft. I really hope we can find a way to bring this to a happy resolution.
Sincerely,
David Shipley

Wasn’t this a James Bond movie plot. The private sector media manipulating news to the public?
Shipley should be charged and tossed in the can.
Matt's success is a remarkable story. He sits where he is today because he won fair and square in the marketplace. But the extraordinary power he now wields over the modern news cycle is beginning to trouble me. These days it seems as if one man is The Grand Filter who determines what is and isn't considered "News". And that gives me pause.
"Tomorrow" was the name of the newspaper.
As readership drops, the amount the Times can charge advertisers drops. This is reflected nicely in the Times stock price. The free market is a bitch, ain't it, NYTimes?
Once again the AHOLES miss the point entirely, I dont care what the editorial says ,he is a Presidential candidate ,put it in and let the people decide ,AHOLE
He should have told the Slimes to shove their endorsement where the sun doesn’t shine
THERE IS NO GOD BUT OBAMA! STOP TELLING YOUR FILTHY LIES OR I'LL REPORT YOU TO THE MEDIA!
/madness
Great Allahpundit line: ‘Youre a real conservative at last, Maverick!’ Anyone think McCain will get a clue?
Thus the epic battle of the NYT/LeftMedia vs Freedom...IMO the Left/Media is making some terrific errors like this one. Of course this will get coverage but only because the Messiah trip has no substantial content and is embarassing if covered too closely. All they have is pictures and rainbows.
Interesting that in their desire to help Obama they have made their lack of objectivity all the more obvious and have created a situation that will create sympathy for John McCain. I just saw Bill Richardson on F&F trying to make this sound like it is no big deal. It was hilarious!
