Conservatism is about self responsibility, self reliance, and rule of laws. The police are the armed enforcers of the city and county governments that they work for. Most in this country through federalism run amuck such as drug war, seat belt safety enforcement etc. A conservative relies on himself for his safety by owning guns to defend himself and driving responsibly to ensure his own safety. If I were to accidentally kill someone the charge would be manslaughter. If a cop kills somebody accidentally with a Taser he should get the same charge. Police should be trained to de-escalate but they tend to escalate confrontations and kill people.

My conclusion is that a healthy mistrust of the police, cities and governments is completely compatible with conservatism.

A healthy mistrust of the news media ought to accompany that mistrust. In fact, I would place a stronger mistrust on the media. If I were to accidentally kill someone the charge would be manslaughter. That would be entirely up to the District Attorney that had jurisdiction, as it will in this case. Mitigating circumstances will definitely play a part, as it would if you were to accidentally kill someone. For example, I think if your car spun out of control on a wet road in a heavy rainstorm, and there was a collision with another car that resulted in a fatality, you would not be likely to be charged with manslaughter if you were not speeding or driving recklessly. However, were you over the legal blood-alcohol limit, you most likely would be.

...who have no concept of self responsibility, practice self reliance in a lawful and moral manner, have no regard for the rule of law and feel no accountability for their provocative actions.

Police officers are trained to deescalate confrontations and many do so very effectively. For every news-making situation like this there are likely dozens of potentially hazardous situations that occur daily across the country. These situations are effectively and professionally defused by police officers with no one getting hurt and rarely noted in the local news.

Perhaps those people who challenge police officers and getting hurt or killed in the process should practice some self responsibility and have a little more regard for the rule of law.
