Head Strong: The real story behind the cover
Philly.com ^ | July 20, 2008 | Michael Smerconish

Posted on 07/20/2008 6:01:43 AM PDT by gusopol3

By now you've seen the cover of the New Yorker depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as depicted in wingnut Internet lore. It's a cover the Obama campaign was quick to condemn. "The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Sen. Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree," said Bill Burton, an Obama spokesman.

Methinks Burton doth protest too much.

After all, this latest campaign kerfuffle was the perfect distraction to mask what's behind the controversial caricature.

Inside the New Yorker is a 14,619-word story by Ryan Lizza that has largely escaped attention. It's not a flattering portrayal of the senator, who comes off as opportunistic. But few know this, so caught up in the cover controversy that they haven't taken the time to read the article itself.

Smerconish has been kind of a fan of Obam. I think none of the items in the 1991-2004 biographical “lacuna “ should be new to anyone though.

Here’s all any Conservative needs to know about Barrack Hussein Obama:

[Barrack Hussein Obama’s record in the Illinois senate:]

- Opposed the Defense of Marriage Act; would work to repeal it in the U.S. Senate; would not vote for any legislation that would restrict the ability of gays and lesbians to marry.
- Opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act four times in Illinois. A similar bill passed the U.S. Senate 98-0. The Born Alive bill would have prohibited a baby from being born alive but left to die according to the mother’s wishes. Obama inexplicably opposed this bill not once, twice, or three times, but four times.
- Obama took almost $90,000 in bundled contributions from the Council for a Livable World. The council is a well-known anti-defense organization.
- Obama puts rigid ideology before what’s best for the people of Illinois, and presumably he would do that as President as well. He has on several occasions made public his opposition to the NAFTA trade agreement and his belief that it must be negotiated. All the while thanks to NAFTA, Illinois exports $1.3 billion in agricultural goods to Canada.
- Obama refused to vote for a bill in the Illinois State Senate that would have increased penalties for drug traffickers.
- Obama voted against a bill that would have delivered the death penalty to gang members who murder first responders.
- Finally, just in case you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Obama was the only member of the Illinois State Senate to vote against a bill that prohibited early release for sexual predators.

Can’t kill the innocent fast enough, can’t free the guilty soon enough!

Where can I find some back-up for the last item in your post? I’d like to send a couple of friends the information re: Obama freeing the pedophiles early.

to say that falls in the category, like questioning the global warming hypothesis or the homosexual- AIDS link, that is demonstrably true but can't be mentioned. Interesting that the guy who wrote Muzzled is "Musled" about that.

Diana In Wisconsin, THANKS very much for posting the link to Vote-Smart!

I had come across that site a while back and lost it...it is a sheer cornucopia of information.

Interstingly, if you to to the “About Us” link on their page to see more info, there is a link to a movie about them, and...the place appears completely infested with liberals. I could be wrong on this, but I don’t think so.

Funny thing is, they seem so dedicated to getting the right information out to people, that I don’t doubt their accuracy...they think that when the majority of people see their information, they are going to want to vote for a liberal candidate.

They actually believe (in my hastily formed impression) that conservatives choose who they are going to vote for on the basis of ignorance. So I get the impression that the libs think this site is a great force multiplier for them. I think they should check their premises.

That could just be my impression, and they did start off the video showing the famous Goldwater campaign commercial...

Regardless, this looks like a great website for information. If, like me, you are of the opinion that if Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, Carl Levin, Ted Kennedy and Barney Frank are all for something, and Duncan Hunter and his kind are against it, that is a pretty good weathervane.

Excellent link. Bookmark it, everyone.

Illinois State Senate site? I got it from an IL Freeper. Maybe she’ll show up.

However, there’s plenty of d@mning evidence right in his own meager US Senate voting record, as linked above. :)

More here, though pretty much “sweetened up” for the public to more easily swallow. ;)

As for the complaint that the cartoon is in bad taste and insulting....That is the silliest thing I have ever read and I can not understand how anyone can say it with a straight face.

Every political cartoon I have ever read has been insulting and in poor taste.

Do we hear an uproar about GW being depicted as a moron with huge ears, always a shrimp in size compared to whomever is depicted in the cartoon with him?

Never.

The liberals do not have the good taste and decency and the repubs shrug it off for what it is...the scribbling of a nasty artist who does not have a real job.

Desperately trying to hold on to the pretense of objectivity.
