Why McCain Must Win

President McCain in 2000 I must be one of the few conservative writers in cyberspace who never feared a McCain presidency. When Senator McCain looked like he might win the Republican nomination in 2000, I asked what, exactly, my friends were so worried about. McCain was honest, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were steeped in moral slipperiness. McCain was pro-life, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were pro-abortion. McCain, like Bush, supported a strong military, while Clinton famously “loathed” the military and Gore followed him like a trained poodle. McCain’s ACU (American Conservative Union) voting record is conservative and was even more conservative in 2000. Who did I favor for the nomination in 2000? Bush, because I liked him more and I thought he would win, but was I afraid of a McCain presidency? No, I was afraid that the nation could not survive a third Clinton term. Has anything happened in the last eight years to change my mind? Not, not really. September 11, 2001 has driven all politics since then, even energy (remember how recently gasoline was cheap?) and while I can conceive of McCain handling the war on terror differently, in some ways, than Bush, I cannot see either man being particularly better than the other. Although we are sometimes loath to admit it, McCain appeared more prescience than Bush on Iraq: McCain supported the Surge, asked for the Surge when Bush was reluctant, and McCain was dead right. The Left would have vilified President McCain just as it vilified President Bush and for the same reasons: It wants America to lose all its wars.

The discussion on this thread is merely more evidence that the do-nothing “popular vote” for President needs to be eliminated.

He would do the same thing to the Supreme Court as McCain.

McCain at WORST is about 50%.

Actually, I believe McCain's conservative voting record is more like 85%.

I think what you are missing is that many of us believe the damage under McCain to be the same or worse.

It’s “all or nothing” “conservatives” who gave us this miserable Congress in ‘06.

No. The Democrats ran to the RIGHT of the GOP in 2006 but didn’t mean it. That party took “the wrong lesson” and nominated that socialist, telling (lying to) themselves the whole while that the country had “moved left”.

I don't "hop like a bunny" on every pro-McQueeg thread.

Smeg off. It's a free country.

Absolutely wrong if you go back and look at the exit polling and other post mortem data. Intuitively first: if the 100% Conservatives taking their marbles and going home were to blame, why did so many heroes of that same group go down in flames? It was the Reagan Democrats and other Social Conservatives that saw no difference between the two parties, much like the two head candidates this year, and they voted for the newer or more genuine Liberal.

Wouldn’t it be more correct to say that Obama must lose than McCain must win?

McCain is not and will not be good for America.

“McCain’s ACU (American Conservative Union) voting record is conservative and was even more conservative in 2000.”

You just said it yourself. He’s gotten less conservative since 2000.

It's a free country.

So far.

President Barack Hussein Obama will change that.

If you are GOP and you still support McCain after he screwed over the GOP time and time again you are no different than a woman who endures cheating and abuse from her man and then defends him and his actions.

Both are sick.

Either they’re incredibly selfish or they just do not care what this guy will do to everyone down the road.

They remind me of that old addage where it's better to be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I agree with you.

Thank those that will not participate for the democratic congress. Who is it that you are trying to punish?

Er, because their usual supporters stayed home?

It wasn't just the RINOs that these idiots were protesting. I well recall it was the party and the president they were "teaching" also.

Nice try, but there isn't any doubt these for-sure yay-hoos got us into the mess we now find ourselves.
