Why McCain Must Win

President McCain in 2000 I must be one of the few conservative writers in cyberspace who never feared a McCain presidency. When Senator McCain looked like he might win the Republican nomination in 2000, I asked what, exactly, my friends were so worried about. McCain was honest, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were steeped in moral slipperiness. McCain was pro-life, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were pro-abortion. McCain, like Bush, supported a strong military, while Clinton famously “loathed” the military and Gore followed him like a trained poodle. McCain’s ACU (American Conservative Union) voting record is conservative and was even more conservative in 2000. Who did I favor for the nomination in 2000? Bush, because I liked him more and I thought he would win, but was I afraid of a McCain presidency? No, I was afraid that the nation could not survive a third Clinton term. Has anything happened in the last eight years to change my mind? Not, not really. September 11, 2001 has driven all politics since then, even energy (remember how recently gasoline was cheap?) and while I can conceive of McCain handling the war on terror differently, in some ways, than Bush, I cannot see either man being particularly better than the other. Although we are sometimes loath to admit it, McCain appeared more prescience than Bush on Iraq: McCain supported the Surge, asked for the Surge when Bush was reluctant, and McCain was dead right. The Left would have vilified President McCain just as it vilified President Bush and for the same reasons: It wants America to lose all its wars.

“There’s not a drop of bugspit difference between the two contenders, and I don’t care how people slice it.”

I take it then you think the surge wasn’t worth bugspit. I’d say that’s a darned big significant policy and judgment difference. Abortion. McCain 0% NARAL. Obama 100% NARAL. How’s that for stark? McCain: Roberts Yes, Alito Yes, Janice Brown Yes. Obama Roberts NO, Alito No, Janice Brown No. And that’s just touching the surface.

Agreed. It’s somewhat a matter of statistics.

Those numbers are old. He hasn’t voted on ANY of the ACU ratings votes since 2006!

No.

McCain voted in ten of the ACU rated votes in 2007.

In 2007, the ACU rating McCain at 80%. Don’t tell me they didn’t I read the article months ago.

There's not a drop of bugspit difference between the two contenders,...

That's simply an uninformed opinion.

Agreed. It’s somewhat a matter of statistics.

Figures don't lie; liars figure. The statistics are questionable. Look at the bills that McCain sponsored, the votes that McCain cast, and McCain's record of actually following through on his promises.

Click the link I posted. 2007 is the most recent for McQueeg

He simply hasn't voted on any of the ACU rated votes since then. None.

I'm tired of talking to you, you are a silly person impervious to facts. The old bromide about leading a horse to water comes to mind. I even posted a link for you.

Have a good evening, I am out of here.

Some "conservative principles" you all must have!"

You're going to discover this for yourself soon...that much is for certain.

The 40% of the time he refused to stand with us, he stood against us. That is the reasoning of he day, right? That’s why I consider a “no vote” the same as a “wrong vote.”

Your post makes no sense. The ACU has noted offered any ratings for 2008.

I can’t explain your link. But I am telling you I saw the article right here on FR a few months ago. I have a memory for numbers. 2007 - 80%. I remember that.

Maybe they haven’t updated the link - I don’t know. It’s no reason to get touchy with me. I haven’t done anything wrong.

I stand corrected. He hasn’t voted since he announced for President. It’s been a painfully long time I’ve been watching.

BUG-SPIT! *pit-ooie*!

I'm done with the GOP rolling over like dogs and pissing themselves every time the left shrieks about global warming, the war in Iraq, confirmation of conservative Justices, and a host of other very important "things". I have NO CONFIDENCE in them or their boy, John McCain, and I'm not alone or unique in this.

I could have had a 4.0 GPA if I could have chosen the classes I wanted to count or the tests I wanted to take.

If McCain had voted for all those bills, consistent with his stated positions, he would have had a hard time breaking 50%. Hence... best not to show up given that it would have tainted his “conservative credentials” even more than they already are.

Are you calling me a liar?

No, unless you are one :P

Is there anything you feel the need to confess?

It's my understanding that these are ACU statistics. Statistics, like financial statements, can be manipulated. Always read the footnotes (or examine the data and methodologies used to generate the statistics).

That's the same logic as saying somebody who sits out an election is just as wrong as somebody who votes for Obama....which of course isn't correct.

They are half wrong...and McCain was half wrong everytime he missed a vote.

So you think the difference between the winning policy in Iraq and opposing the winning policy in Iraq is bugspit?

I have no confidence in you as a voter.
