1976 Revisited - McCain needs to run a "turn the corner" campaign
NRO ^ | July 19, 2008 | Michael Barone

Posted on 07/19/2008 2:09:46 PM PDT by flyfree

...The Ford ad team told them more — how he had grown up in Middle America, played football for the University of Michigan (the name of the team was omitted in ads aired in Ohio) and served in the military in World War II. There's an assumption this year that voters know John McCain pretty well. But my sense is that there is still a lot of filling in the blanks that the McCain campaign can do.

Second, they filled in the blanks on Jimmy Carter. Most voters wanted to support a Democrat, and one who had smoothed over the nation's racial divisions — as they do today. The press up through early summer was giving him mostly adulatory coverage. But voters didn't know much about Carter. He made, as most candidates do, and as Obama seems to be doing now — some mistakes along the way.

The Ford ad team honed in on his record, with man-on-the-street ads, some filmed on the streets of Atlanta. It was risky, going against the grain of public opinion. But the Ford campaign persisted, and it worked. The McCain campaign needs to take the same risk and to persist in the face of media disapproval.

Finally, the Ford campaign altered the mood of the nation. Voters then, as now, thought the nation was off on the wrong track. The Ford campaign, with a catchy song, "I'm Feeling Good About America," and upbeat ads starting off with shots of Air Force One, argued that their candidate was leading the nation around the corner, making Americans feel proud again. The McCain campaign needs to do something similar, to argue that their candidate can help the nation turn the corner and lead us into better times.

Exactly how they can do this I'm not sure. ...

No , it’s 1992 again. A once popular sitting President has low approval ratings due to the media “Bush is an idiot” daily trickle. The democratic nominee is a young slime ball
who the media has crowned as the new Kennedy & Messiah.
A small down turn in the economy is turned into a reccession
by the media daily doses of bad news.

It only worked because Bush ran one of the worst campaigns in history , almost as if he wanted to lose. Not to mention Perot.

But the Ford campaign persisted, and it worked.

What worked?

Gerald Ford, Nixon's Vice President, became President in 1974 upon Nixon's resignation. After that, Ford went on to lose the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter.

And the New kennedy Messiah of that year only won 43%.
The new kennedy Messiah of this year isn’t polling much better.

Juan is so busy flipping and flopping that it's hard to know what or who he really is.

This can be a very high-volume ping list at times.

We are exploring giving subscribers two different options for receiving pings: either to individual threads or to a single "digested" thread at the end of each calendar day. FReepmail rabscuttle385 if you are interested in receiving one or the other.

Take care to check the "mccainlist", "mccaintruthfile", and "mccain" keyword search links for related threads, since we can not possibly ping you to every relevant article that is posted. To flag a relevant thread, please add the keywords "mccainlist" and "mccaintruthfile".

Republican Commissar’s Warning: By joining this ping list, you may be subjected to the irrational rants and ramblings of McCainiacs, of "moderate" Republicans, of deeply confused conservatives resigned to voting for the lesser of two Democrats, and of countless trolls who simply want to meet a new overlord.

What the heck is McCain doing? The guy has been in the Senate how long and he can’t use a teleprompter? Why is he running? What does he want to accomplish? What is raison d’etre. He has moron advisers who seem to go out of their way to say something incredibly stupid.

“Why is he running?”

It’s his turn. How dare you question? Ask Bob Dole how well that works.

No , it’s 1992 again.

I say it is feeling a lot like 1968.

He needs an incredibly articulate and insightful running mate who has a proven record of staying on message.

I’d say Romney. Then, the day of the nomination, McCain says he wants Romney to replace him as the candidate and Romney picks Sarah Palin as the VP.

A neat idea, but would indies go for Romney?

It worked for Carter. Ford lost.

Be still my heart. That is really the Republican dream ticket; Romney/Palin.

LOL. You don't think it had to do with both Bush's selling out conservatives?
