By the time he abdicated, it was irrelevant. Nobody paid him any attention anymore, so it didn’t matter whether he clung to the throne or not.
People forget that “leaders” have only the power they get from people who follow them. That’s why those who obsess over a presidential coup are being silly.
For an American president, right or left, to “take over” and dump the Constitution would require at minimum hundreds of thousands and more likely tens of millions of willing followers, appropriately placed in the power structure, especially the military. I don’t see these people out there.

You are just so wrong. A cancer cell begins as one and before long it is tens of thousands, then millions and eventually death. We must always guard our country from the red cancer. Elect Obama and you are introducing a catalyst. It only takes a cancerous Supreme Court, a cancerous Congress to support the “take over” and we are history. I pray this does not happen

It’s happening incrementally via the tyranny of the Supreme Court.
How many of the rights in the Bill of Rights still exist? Kelo killed the 5th Amendment. Do the American people know how to recognize a Communist? Millions are going to vote for one — B.H.O.

What makes the leftists dangerous is that they think there are indeed millions eager to follow them.

I dont see these people out there. Yet FReepers have recently been calling for weakening of the Constitution...one of the very protections against the takeover by any one faction. (In one stunning example, it's often those who are afraid of a Islamist takeover that call for such a counterproductive move.)
