King George V of England was a cousin of the Czar. Arrangements were made to bring the family to England. One view is that George V took cold feet and thought that some insurrection might take place in his own country. This I find hard to believe that such a problem would have evolved.
The blame was promptly laid on Lloyd George, British Prime Minister. This, after the horror of the massacre. I believe that evidence has since exonerated Lloyd George.
Of course, once the Bolsheviks were in power, such a safe conduct for the Royal family would be virtually impossible.
O, the wonders of Communism. Paradise.
The most interesting part of the article was the revelation that both husband and wife were addicted to drugs.
As in Dr.Zhivago, houses will be used to house the poor and the owners will be better off elsewhere.
Excellent graphic
Sometimes it's easy to forget that even Anastasia was 17 years old when this happened.
Not minimizing the tragedy, but just saying that even though I know their ages, I still picture them younger at the time of the massacre.
When I was growing up, there was always speculation that Anastasia had somehow survived. Horrifying story...
I had the same thought.
My knowledge of this was limited to the books I read but that was the same conclusion I came to.
I always felt the Czarina was the ruler.
You are mistaking the machinery of power for the reality of power.
In the final analysis, power does indeed grow out of the barrel of a gun, precisely why the Founders added the Second.
Every person in our Armed Forces takes an oath not to the government or the president, but to the Constitution.
Given the strong military culture of honor, I suspect any attempt by politicians to bypass the constitution would result in armed resistance by the military, more or less what happened in Chile under Pinochet.
For a political coup to succeed, the government would have to first gain operational control over the military. This would require replacing huge numbers of officers and would require at least a decade, probably longer, and could not be done discreetly.
Could this all happen? Sure, but it would take a very long time and I’m not concerned about it any time soon.
Not to mention many millions of the “unorganized militia.”
I just read that long article - great read. I’m going to buy the book in my next assault on Amazon.
1. That's Milton, not Dante.
2. It's Satan speaking, not Milton.
In the USA liberals are essentially wishy-washy socialists.
Socialists worldwide are squeamish Communists.
Quite true.
Actually there are millions who would follow them in destroying the Constitution, but there are a whole lot more millions, including those with the vast majority of the weapons, who would resist them.
They could get us into a civil war without meaning to.
