Let’s say that in 2010 you have $40,000-$50,000 to spend on a new hybrid car. Would you rather buy one Chevrolet Volt, or for about the same money, two Toyota Priuses?

I’ve been tracking the Chevy Volt since its inception. I don’t know where you get the $45,000 price tag. Did you pull this number out of the air or from some place else. Can you give me a source for your info.
Mr. McCain has no sense of or appreciation for private property.

Do I plug it into a coal fired power plant? With McCain’s Cap-&-Trade coming probably not. I’ll just park it until 2050 when the nuke plants come online.

I may have understated the cost. It may $50,000.
Tax credits are available for many things the Gov’t would like to see more of. Whether tax credits have any real effect is not clear.

I am not interested in my tax dollars being given to people to buy cars and I don’t care if they run on tap water.
If the car is worth it, if it really can be a replacement for the cars we have, then people will do what is nescessary to purchase them. You know, American capitalism.. If you build a better mouse trap people will buy it......
They already give thousands of dollars in credits to people buying hybrids. 75,000 for each manufacturer.
Of course, they didn’t do that until after I bought both of mine. I did get tax deductions though.
I don’t like tax code being used for manipulation, but of government “spending”, I like tax credits more than most, at least it’s money back to the people.
Okay, $40,00 dollars for a under powered vehicle.
This spring I purchased a 2008 Kia Rio (35mpg) and a 2008 Honda 1300 Tourer MC (46mpg). I got both vehicles for a little over $28,000.
Now, why on earth would I buy a Chevy Volt for $40,000?????
I’ll probably get flamed for this but here goes. I see no difference in giving tax incentives for buying efficient American made cars, and so called “sin” taxes. In both, you are trying to reward desirable behavior. Now, on the subject of road taxes in general, I’d bet money that most road taxes were instituted long after there was already a road infrastructure in this country. In Tennessee, many increases in road taxes have been passed with the promise that the funds would forever be used for roads only. This of coarse lasts only until about the next legislative session. With the billions being raised in the name of road construction and maintenance, that begs the question, how did we have roads before the tax? And what happened to the original funding thereof?

You are gonna eat some crow on that prediction. My sources tell me it’s likely to be $33-37K. Read and learn something. You haven’t given me your sources.

Currectly the Honda Civic Hybrid is about $22,000. The Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima Hybrids are about $28,000, the same or nearly so as the Prius.
There will be more coming from the other manufacturers. Also 50 state turbo-diesels.
Instead of knocking GM and their Volt, I am pleased to see an American auto company with anything to put forth, as alternatives.
BTW I know several very happy Hybrid owners, Prius, Camry, Lexus.
