For Some Ohioans, Even Meat Is Out Of Reach
by Yuki Noguchi
All Things Considered, July 17, 2008 · A generation ago, the livelihood of Gloria Nunez's family was built on cars.
Her father worked at General Motors for 45 years before retiring. Her mother taught driver's education. Nunez and her six siblings grew up middle class.
Things have changed considerably for this Ohio family.
Nunez's van broke down last fall. Now, her 19-year-old daughter has no reliable transportation out of their subsidized housing complex in Fostoria, 40 miles south of Toledo, to look for a job.
Nunez and most of her siblings and their spouses are unemployed and rely on government assistance and food stamps. Some have part-time jobs, but working is made more difficult with no car or public transportation.

About a year ago, I was standing behind one in the express line, male, white, 30ish, able bodied . . . lots of nice deli foods and cuts from the meat counter. He also had a carton of smokes. The clerk wouldn't let him use his "Access" Card to pay for the smokes. Finally, he pulled out the cash to pay for the smokes. I had two items so was curious to see what kind of car he drove. Mine is 11 years old with 160,000 miles. His was shining new late model. I'm paying taxes. He's living off them. What is freaking wrong with this picture?
I said that at first, then changed to months before posting ;-)
Cheater!
So why aren't they pooling their money to save up for a car -- er, tow truck in their case?
One look at her and it is obvious why.
Because here in America we have shortage of cheap grain. The mpoverished can eat all they want of these foods, but can't afford meat and fresh veggies.
Carbs make you fat.
Trust me, both of these women are malnourished.
Beanies and weenies is dirt cheap and it wont make you into a whale.
Some chicken and a salad....
Lack of money isnt why they are porkers
Ar they serious? No high school education, never worked in her life... car accident left her too depressed to work... weighs at least 300 lbs but complaining about how bad it is... has no transportation out of their public housing...
Even a liberal wouldn’t have much sympathy, would they?
Maybe they should walk to work?
What would this country have been like if we had these types back in the days of people packing up and moving west? Good Lord.
“never worked” “no high school degree” “two kids” “most of her family dont work or work part time” “daughter should have kid for more money”
Oh, I get the picture.
they should have just resized the pic this way.
Whoa!! I think a bit of time with no meat & having to walk a few miles would do them both a lot of good!!
Looks like they’ve already consumed two lifetimes worth of food a piece!
Apparently bras are too expensive too. Ugh.
These women should have spent more time pursuing an education, and bettering themselves, than pursuing food. Maybe they'd have a decent job by now.
Because they don't want to work, and will use any excuse not to:
"Nunez, 40, has never worked and has no high school degree. She says a car accident 17 years ago left her depressed and disabled, incapable of getting a job. Instead, she and her daughter, Angelica Hernandez, survive on a $637 Social Security check and $102 in food stamps."
Their “twins” are supported by their stomachs.
L0L! Narf!
Because that takes effort and sacrifice. In their mind, the government is supposed to bring the jobs to them. Of course that wouldn’t help these people as they have never worked anyway. Who cares if the jobs are leaving, they weren’t working them when they were there.
I think they're bigger than that city.
