Pelosi stands firm against offshore drilling

WASHINGTON: Upon entering Congress in 1987, Representative Nancy Pelosi quickly became part of the solid California front against oil drilling along much of the nation's coast.

The 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and the steady push to tap the potential reserves off the state's rugged coast had galvanized Californians and made opposition to offshore drilling part of the political DNA of up-and-coming figures like Pelosi.

She repeatedly resisted oil drilling in marine sanctuaries off the state's coast near her San Francisco district and, after joining the Appropriations Committee, was an advocate of reinstating the coastal drilling ban through spending restrictions each year.

"We learned the hard way that oil and water do not mix on our coast," Pelosi told a key committee in 1996 as she made her case for keeping the ban in place before a Congress then controlled by Republicans.

Now, with gas prices soaring, those drilling restrictions are facing their most severe test in years as calls intensify to more aggressively pursue domestic oil. Yet despite increasing pressure from President George W. Bush, a full-bore assault by congressional Republicans and some anxiety among her own rank-and-file Democrats, Pelosi is not budging.

"The president of the United States, with gas at $4 a gallon because of his failed energy policies, is now trying to say that is because I couldn't drill offshore," Pelosi said in an interview. "That is not the cause, and I am not going to let him get away with it."

Her voice carries considerable weight since, as speaker, Pelosi is in a position to prevent a vote on expanded drilling from reaching the floor

I don’t get it. Her Highness promised to lower gas prices back when she took control in 2006 and gas prices were $2.56/gallon. Is it just me, or do gas prices actually seem higher now?

Couldn’t Repubicans get the majority back in both houses by running on a campaign promise to lift the congressional ban?

They could, but they won't. The 'Pubs have two Silver Hammers this election season with which to beat the 'Rats into a pulp, if they only have the guts and smarts to use them. First, energy independence (drill here, drill now). The second, no taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants (note illegal immigrants, the 'Rats always lie/recast the debate in terms of immigration, which no one is against as long as it's is legal). Those are sure-fire winners, ripe for the taking. The 'Rats have staked out public positions on these issues that are at odds with a significant majority of public opinion, and they will have a hard time either selling those to the public or backpedaling their way out of them (i.e., "nuanced").

But the key to success is that the 'Pubs have to successfully exploit the issue and be ready for the inevitable 'Rat response of deflection and obfuscation. They can't let them get away with that. They have to keep focused on the two plain, simple issues. If they do that, they win. If not, no one will care, or, worse, they'll let the 'Rats blame it on the 'Pubs (which the media will enable).

Even better: Pelosi stands firm against the will of the people.

I couldn't agree more. Why does the GOP insist on playing the nice guy all the time? Why does McCain “lean across the isle”, but never get anything in return? I think it's time to take off the kidd gloves and slap the crap out of the Dems on this issue.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the Energy Policy Bush signed was on the Green side. Isn’t the Green part of his Energy policy the EXACT reason prices have risen—this is the EXACT kind energy policy these idiots wanted to begin with.

Nancy, we have 4$ a gallon gas BECAUSE WE NEED FREAKING OIL!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND YOU FREAKING WITCH?! YOU’RE NOT QUALIFIED TO BE A DOG CATCHER!! GET OUT!

Unfortunately for Nan, the current congressional oil drilling ban expires on September 30, 2008 and she doesn’t have the votes to renew it over a Bush veto.

Hell she doesn't even have the votes to renew it even if there were a president willing to sign it.

“If the Republicans don’t grow a pair and beat the Democrats senseless over this issue they deserve to be a bunch of losers.”

I fear we have the wrong RINO at the top of the ticket to beat the Dems. senseless about this or anything else.

They are not "immigrants" unless they have a visa appropriate to immigration status. They are merely undocumented tourists (at best), and must be returned to their homes as soon as possible.

Tourists also have to add any children they have had born in this country to their "family visa" just as soon as they get it.

That means none of those tourists' kids have ever been considered citizens under US law. After all, US citizens don't need a visa to be here.

She doesn’t need the votes. The first OCS or ANWR lease will unleash a barrage of lawsuits by the environwackos that will tie up drilling for 20 years or more. How do we get around that one?

Worst Speaker in the history of the Congress. But she represents San Francisco and Marin County. What else would you expect?

Quite possibly the single most cogent analysis of the 2008 Presidential election I've seen.

Too bad the GOP won't do it.

Ok, I have it. We can send an anonymous letter to nutjob Nancy suggesting that when both of her friends from the CPUSA can schedule some time off they can plan an old fashioned protest! They can go chain themselves to any number of existing offshore oil platforms. Cool huh?

I love it.Pelosi has backed herself into a corner on this.I doubt Pelosi appreciates the impact high gas prices have on the middle class.Even a few of the libs i work with are perplexed/po’ed re: NP’s refusal(inability?)to come to terms with reality.Advice to Nancy-stick to your guns, and whatever you do,don’t back down:)
