Romney Makes His VP Case

Posted by Michael Scherer | Comments (41) | Permalink | Trackbacks (0) | Email This

On Monday night, at a fund-raiser in New Mexico, John McCain said this about his former mortal enemy, Mitt Romney: “I’m appreciative every time I see Mitt on television on my behalf. He does a better job for me than he did for himself as a matter of fact.” This may not have been a joke.

Yesterday, Romney sat down for an interview with CBS News. It is a striking interview, in part because Romney seems to be making the McCain argument better than McCain, or McCain's campaign. There is a clarity to the soundbites that McCain has mostly lacked, a clear line of attack against Obama's experience and McCain's plans. Add to that whatever fundraising burst Romney could provide as a VP candidate, as well as Romney's strength in key swing states like Michigan and Nevada, and it's not hard to see why McCain may end up with a running mate whose hand he didn't shake in the primaries.

[See video at link]

EXCEPT: Mitt says in the interview that McCain distinguishes himself from Obama on drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. This is wrong, according to the latest McCain statements. Both McCain and Obama oppose drilling in ANWR.

Yes, sir. I am a Mormon. And no, I am not a Christian like you. I would never lay claim to that.

I’m in Smyrna now and can honestly say the illegals are gone. Now is the time to put up that barrier. My issue now is Abortion, War and Judges. I honestly believe that if Obama gets it then its all over.

WRONG.

Herpes simplex (Types I and II) gives you a vote,
unlike Mitt Romney.

You have to go out of your way to get them.
Romney’s fascist schemes attack you without your choice.

I do wish Juan would take his damn lips off of Obama’s butt and start kissing ours. Would be a nice change of pace.

Read the section of the article about his political career and they clearly state that George Romney stayed out of the 1964 Presidential run.

So, you won’t answer the question or you can’t? I can either position, really. Making the argument that all of the acknowledged, leading Conservative leaders whom I listed see/saw Romney as sufficiently Conservative were all bought off is a hard thing to explain to reasonable people.

But, since you have your own expert posts to refer to, why not just tell us again about the vast conspiracy that these faux Conservatives have to bring down Conservativism? Humor us weak minded fools, won’t you? Maybe we’ll see the light this time? You never know!

Here is another one. George Romney was a delegate from Michigan in 1964 as he was elected governor there in 1962. They did not say that he was Presidential candidate in 1964.

Yeah, but it will poison the mix for Mitt. If he could not carry the ticket, and not win the nomination, their case becomes even less stable.

Then we can concentrate on Conservatives, they will be needed...

I think Barbour/Palin sounds good...

“You need to have your glasses and your brains checked, Gal.”

Liberals typically have to resort to childish name calling ... Guess I hit a nerve ... . On FR that’s not necessary and it is discouraged.

George Romney made his famous misstatement in the 1968 election.

The 1968 Republican presidential campaign was no different.
Although the GOP nominee, former Vice President Richard M. Nixon, went on to capture the White House in the fall campaign against Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, he had not been the favorite for the nomination a year before.
That distinction was held by Michigan's Governor George W. Romney.
A moderate whose views on civil rights, America's cities, and other domestic issues made him extremely popular both in his own state and throughout the country, Romney's presidential ambitions foundered on the most divisive issue facing the country, the Vietnam War.
Indeed, Romney's bid for the Oval Office might have succeeded if not for his misstatements, ambiguous policy, and dovish sympathies in regard to America's longest war.

But the topic is Mitt Romney, I don't see anything in you list about him, except the Goldwater bit ...

What I see are legitimate questions about the man that have never been answered honestly by his supporters.

Sad thing is, if they had done so from the get go instead of the hard sell/insult act, they may have done better.
