While moving us AWAY from the employer stranglehold of health care is the right move, providing tax credits is nothing more than a big government band-aid approach typical of a Liberal. It is just an underhanded way of getting us to universal government controlled health care.

A tax credit is a disguised government subsidy. Why not just send everyone a check when they do what the government wants them to do? It would be more honest. Why subsidize anything?

If McCain’s plan will allow me to buy insurance that doesn’t cover abortions, I’m on board.

Instead of giving a ‘tax credit’ for health care insurance purchases, why not just lower taxes to everyone? Let people decide what they’d like to do with their own money.

I see enough to want to see more. We, or our employers, are paying for uninsured health care anyway, and that’s not going to be reversed. A plan that makes our industry more globally competitive, that is more equitable, and that has the potential to lower costs, is worth a closer look IMHO.

It's not or will never be a perfect world...

Let's face it, there will be some type of government health “something-or-other” due to the overwhelming number of citizens who want nanny to take care of them. It's stupid, not courageous, to keep fighting a losing battle. Better to dodge the bullet of full blown SocialistCare and back something like this.

As the saying goes on Wall Street, “Bears make money, bulls make money, pigs get slaughtered.” If you insist on all or nothing, you'll wind up getting slaughtered.

McCain would also allow people to purchase insurance through nontraditional groups, such as churches

Sounds like a Catholic church insurer would be for you...

I am waiting for people to accuse McCain of giving this to illegals. It's unbelievable that the McCainiphobiacs never give him credit anything. It also amazing that I have never seen a McCainiphobiac criticize Obama.

It would certainly be interesting if people could get insurance through their churches.

The Roman Catholic Church could set up a health care plan that is consistent with the Church’s policies and beliefs. For example, the plan would not cover abortions, contraceptives, benefits for unmarried partners (straight or gay), etc.

The CATO institute, no fan of McCain, has no problem with it.

If it had Duncan or Fred’s name on it, people here would wet themselves with glee.

I will admit that if this plan does not give tax credits to those not paying taxes, it is much better than Obama’s. Is it enough to make me trust McCain’s word after all these years? No

The problem with tax credits though they are better than government run health care is that they still do not address the problems associated with Health care. The industry is structured currently as to virtually protect it from the normal forces that drive prices down. A lot of this is because of the purchasing of group insurance policies. If employers would provide a certain allotment and then allow the employees to join any health plan then Health Insurance companies would be more apt to compete and provide better more tuned services. I know over the past few years that the response to growing health care cost has been to increase health deductions and decrease benefits so America is essentially consistently paying more for less.

I think Health Care Savings accounts are really the best approach but the best approach would be the individual being more and more control over their health care dollars. One of the reasons Hillary Clinton so opposed Health Care Savings accounts as options was because she was appalled that the money would not be going into the government coffers and that people might not go to the doctor as much because they’d be too focused on saving money. She had such a conversation with Congressman Hastert when she was pushing her horrible plan and her inflexibility more than anything killed her plan.

We need more competition, more doctors, more independent clinics, more nonprescription drugs, more at home tests, etc. We need to get real with medicine and make it more consumer friendly. We pay for water, electricity, clothing, food, etc and their is no reason to believe we shouldn’t pay for our own health care.

A tax credit is not necessarily a government subsidy. Because of the current...out dated tax system...it’s the only way to give a credit back to the people who choose to exercise some personal responsibility.

We are going to get “something” and no amount of ostrich delustional flights of fancy will stop the run away health care locomotive. This sounds like the absolute best, all things considered.

Consider this plan after McCain has already proposed tax cuts at the individual and corporate level, yet people say there is no difference between him and Obama.

He plans to provide all Americans with a $2,500 refundable tax credit for individuals and a $5,000 credit for families, regardless of how people obtain their insurance.

Drop the word "refundable" and I'm behind it 100%, as it is, call me 99% behind it. By "refundable", it is basically a handout to those who pay less than that in total taxes. On the other hand, we're already subsidizing their insurnace, most likely, so this is really still net benefit for actual taxpayers, and will allow people to buy the insurance they need, as opposed to being stuck with whatever their employer offers.
