Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.
Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of "Special Report." They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.
In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, substitute for Chris Wallace as host of "Fox News Sunday" and anchor special events.
A former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days, Hume has been a central part of Fox's success. He has anchored on election nights and at political conventions and moderated a number of presidential debates. Hume has enjoyed good access to top Bush administration officials; when Vice President Cheney was under intense criticism after accidentally shooting a hunting companion two years ago, he did one interview, with Hume.
Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has made no decision on whether "Special Report," which began as a temporary program during the Clinton impeachment, will continue, or who would anchor it if it does, the sources said.

There’s a reason that Rush Limbaugh calls O’Gasbag “Ted Baxter.”
Always liked Brit Hume and having him around on Special Report was great. Glad he’s sticking around in a reduced role. Frankly, he’s far too young to retire. 65 is middle-aged!
Me thinks it’s time for a real conservative but I gotta $100 that says we’ll end up with a bedwetter.
bummer - i really like brit hume
might not be the right show for him, but i want more david asman
i hated to see john gibson leave too
Did Brit have more than one child? His son Sandy killed himself.
Well. This stinks.
Shep seems like a good candidate for that :)
...continuing....and have boob jobs, tummy tucks, lip jobs, nose jobs, and the list goes on and on... they have the Robert Palmer girls in blonde....
But most of all, after the shunning of Fred by Fox, the E.D. Hill episode along with their constant prattle on Hillary (who I despise), Brit is all I watch. After Brit is gone, there will be very little Fox news in my home.
At least with CNN, I know where they stand.
You know what- for the longest time I couldn’t stand her- but after listening to her I discovered she’s very bright and level-headed. She has kind of an unfortunate voice- and I don’t care for the whole banter thing she does with Hemmer. They’re both good and if the network would LET THEM- they could do serious and more in-depth coverage.
The men on Fox are not going to pass for the savvy, worldly and fatherly, Mr. Hume who is an icon. They are way short off his mark. So, go for a younger demographic but don't compromise on the smarts or the VERY conservative credentials.
We don't need “cuties” who cut and run to MSNBC. That tandem could definitely work. A future answer to “Huntley and Brinkley?” And Patti Ann Brown has the most mellifluous delivery on TV.
Amen, Brother!
Cheese and crackers, this is not good news. I may cry.
I agree
This is really sad. Hume is the Ronald Reagan of broadcast journalism.
LOL! Perfect description.
Bingo! Let them do news!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish him the best in his (semi) retirement.
Hey Mr. Rather... take some notes how to leave a broadcasting job with your dignity intact...
[There is no reason for me to want to watch FOX after Brit leaves.]
I can’t think of a Fox personality who can replace him. With our luck it will be Shep Smith, Bwahahahahahaha
‘Taint funny, McGee!
