Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.
Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of "Special Report." They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.
In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, substitute for Chris Wallace as host of "Fox News Sunday" and anchor special events.
A former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days, Hume has been a central part of Fox's success. He has anchored on election nights and at political conventions and moderated a number of presidential debates. Hume has enjoyed good access to top Bush administration officials; when Vice President Cheney was under intense criticism after accidentally shooting a hunting companion two years ago, he did one interview, with Hume.
Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has made no decision on whether "Special Report," which began as a temporary program during the Clinton impeachment, will continue, or who would anchor it if it does, the sources said.

65! Boy I hope to look half as good as Brit when I hit 65.
I didn’t realize he was that old.
Brit is 65?? He sure looks a lot younger! I will be sorry to see him go.
There is no reason for me to want to watch FOX after Brit leaves.
I hope Brit will enjoy having more time to call his own.
Well, that’s not good. He’s their best, and every bit the newsman and hard-hitting, fair questioner Russert was.
Better!
Definitely the coolest anchor.
You really have to love Kurtz making reference to Hume’s conservative leanings. Guess when someone doesn’t march in step with the pack they need to be singled out.
Fox News is credible due to men like Hume. Old school news guy who could have carried any of the major networks’ nightly news with ease.
Brit ping.
Trying to think of a good reason to watch FOX after he leaves...
I have a new slogan for Fox News:
“Chicks who talk really really fast!”
Horrible news. They should cancel his show when he steps down and just let Shep do another hour of his show and have him go up against Wolf during that time slot since it seems Wolf is on the air for 8 hours a day on CNN.
Hume ping.
Please let me know if you think of something.
Britt Hume Is FOX NEWS.
There is no reason for me to want to watch FOX after Brit leaves.
———————Me either.
It’s the steroids!
Just kidding.
He does look very well for his age.
Another hour of the liberal Shep, and I turn off FOX.
