The cover of this week's New Yorker magazine depicts Obama in one-piece Muslim garb and headdress fist-bumping his booted, Afro-wearing wife Michelle in camo clothes with a rifle and ammo-belt slung over her shoulder beneath a portrait of Osama bin-Laden while the American flag burns in the fireplace -- in the presidential Oval Office.
It's got everything incendiary except a vest bomb. Which is what should telegraph to most people that it's way over-the-top and, therefore, satire.
But politicians don't like satire because it's subject to differing interpretations.
Obama declined comment today, seeking not to elevate its importance. And his campaign issued a statement by Bill Burton which Mike Allen of Politico.com reported as, "The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Sen. Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."

“Here come the media!”
This will become proof of the hate of the right wing! All of a sudden, the New Yorker will be a “well known Conservative hate tabloid”!
I must say that someone did an excellent job of drawing and incorporating all the ‘messages’ that BO and his wife are sending me.....as a conservative. What a nightmare....
“but politicians don’t like satire because it’s subject to differing interpretations....”
what a load of manure.
notice there was no complaint from any liberal punk “journalists” when condoleeza rice was characterized as a monkey in some idiotic, infantile comic strip done by a liberal pundit.
a wonderful example of double-standard “journalism”.
IMHO
I like it!
In my mind the picture of Michelle Obama conjures up images of Winnie Mandela. This is not a good association for Michelle Obama.
Correct and correct. They thought they were being clever, but it's backfired.
I knew a girl who was a prosecuter. She said defendents would always approach her for leniency, saying, "It was only a joke that went bad!"
Her reply was always, "You laugh too hard, you cry."
Exactly right. I'd forgotten about that lady, but the shoe definitely fits.
I think someone could make a lot of mileage with some ads in that direction. Not McCain, of course, but one of his evil supporters.
I wonder if Michelle says anything about Winnie Mandela in her iniquitous Princeton thesis? At one time she was greatly admired by the left.
“THOSE are the Obamas I knew!!”

Absolutely. This is the Dukakis Tank Picture of the '08 campaign. And, if memory serves, that photo op was served up by someone who was trying to help him, just like The New Yorker was trying to help Obama. Perfect, absolutely perfect.
This cover will be the enduring image of this campaign.
I hate to go on there. I always need a hot shower afterwards, LOL.
Such a contrast to FR, here we discuss the issues and facts, there it is all about feelings and how the media and Republicans are always doing them wrong, no substance and a lot of foul mouths.
Yeah, I wonder how they can even eat with those mouths. Grin.
