Ode to (manly) men
World Net Daily ^ | July 12, 2008 | Patrice Lewis

I love men. No, not like that (well … maybe a little). I love men because they're rough, tough, practical, logical and don't mind taking out the garbage.

I love how men are sensible and no nonsense, the way their minds churn out useful, obvious solutions to problems that baffle me, the way they operate by logic rather than emotion. I love the way they stay calm and focused under situations that send me into a chicken-running-around panic.

I love their protective instinct. Yes, men can be aggressive and violent, but there is also a time and place for that, too. If a burglar is in my house, I would rather have my husband aggressively defending me than cowering behind the sofa (as I would be doing).

I grew up like a lot of us grew up – cities, suburbs, some rural lite. The men around me were your typical men. They worked hard; they played hard. They were dedicated family men devoted to their wives and children. They were sensitive. They appreciated art and music, wine and dancing. I believe the current term is "metrosexual."

Then five years ago, we moved to Idaho and fell face-first into a cliché. Unless you're in an urban enclave, Idaho doesn't have metrosexuals. It has "retrosexuals" in vast and unapologetic numbers. A "retrosexual," in case you haven't heard, is a real man, a man's man, not some wimpy citified wuss (ahem). And here in rural Idaho, I quickly learned that a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Yes, this can include belching, breaking wind and scratching his privates, but more often it's a regression back to startlingly old-fashioned un-PC ways.

Out here men hunt, fish, build houses, ride horses, swig beer, say "ain't," drive trucks, fix tractors and

Thank you, Lord, that the wussification of America does not proceed apace.

Here in Retroville, women live in the best of all worlds. We get respect in the workplace, esteem for our intelligence and admiration for our abilities. We also get chivalry, protection and manners. We celebrate the differences. We know men are civilized by women, and women are protected by men. We are not and never will be a unisex society – that's not the way it's supposed to be.

It sounds like you live in the perfect town. Do you put stuff in the water to make men behave? LOL

I want more men on TV and in the movies.

Oh, how I wish that pronoun applied to me. She lives in the perfect town. I live in Minnesota, where a plurality of the electorate has an unsettling propensity to choose a governor who wears feather boas.

I agree with you, don’t watch much TV but they make men look wimpy and women look bossy and mean. Kids watch and learn..

I like manly men, but not the burping, rude bodily function type of thing. That totally turns me off. I want strong men but men who care and have empathy and feelings for others.

On TV, anyway, you may have to watch more of the Turner Classic Network to find them.

My Dad is everytbhing the liberals despise. He loves baseball, he loves football, likes Nascar. He built his own company worth about 20 million dollars. He goes to church every Sunday. He’s the way men are supposed to be. I’m in a relatively new relationship (friendship blossoming into something more) and he’s just like my Dad. Love of God, love of country, worship of Reagan and most of all love of the Chicago Cubs and Bears and Notre Dame football.

She had to move to Idaho to figure this out, but at least she did figure it out.

When Will Rogers was asked whether or not he supported the 19th Amendment (I think), giving women the right to vote, He said, “ I think Mother Nature gave women so many advantages I don’t see whey the law should give them more.”

That is what this article is talking about and I hope that attitude gains momentum. That is the way it used to be and the way it should be.

My man doesn’t live in Idaho - but he is (forgive the cliche) ‘all that and more’. And, I adore him. It’s too bad he can’t be cloned (and I’m NOT sharing. LOL!)

More extremely good anecdotal news on this thread. Tell him I can't in good conscience support the Bears over my Vikings, but I do entertain fond notions of a Twins-Cubs World Series (I've been a Cubs fan since I saw my first game at Wrigley in 1970), and I'm looking forward to a resurgence of Notre Dame football fortunes.

LOL. More than likely, they DON'T put stuff in the water: fluoride, contraceptive residues (from urine), etc....

If you think a man can’t be strong and also be caring then it puzzles me.

Guess it depends upon your definition of what strong means. Brute strength doesn’t interest me.

I grew up with the most wonderful of Fathers. Intelligent, patient, manly and loving. He never spoke badly of others.

I'm a guy, but not a tough dude. I might even qualify as metrosexual. I'm into arts and poetry. And I've taken some beatings from bullies hopped up on testosterone.

That being said, it take all kinds. I have no problem with the guys who want to tackle or throw baseballs at each other, and they have no problem with me. You see, another part of being a man is knowing your limitations. And also knowing what you're good at and not being afraid to pursue what you are good at even though others members of your sex might consider it to be "girly."
