US Suffers Heavy Afghan Losses (Reports of 8 or 9 killed in Kunar Province Attack)
BBC ^ | Sunday, July 13, 2008

Posted on 07/13/2008 10:16:53 AM PDT by kristinn

At least eight US soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan in clashes with Taleban militants.

US commander Daniel Dwyer told the BBC the soldiers had been killed in clashes in the north-east of the country.

The BBC's Martin Patience in Kabul says it is one of the biggest single losses in a day for the coalition since the start of military operations there.

The attack came as international and Afghan security forces battled militants on several fronts.

On Sunday, US forces said 40 insurgents had been killed in Helmand province in the past 24 hours.

There are conflicting reports as to where the latest attack took place.

A foreign military spokesman said US soldiers and members of the Afghan National Army came under attack in Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan.

But Afghan officials insist the fighting took place in neighbouring Nuristan Province.

Nato reported that a small American Combat Outpost in Dara-I-Pech district of Kunar Province, came under heavy fire at around 04.30 local time.

It said insurgents had fired "with small arms, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars using homes, shops and the mosque in the village of Wanat for cover."

Local officials say a number of civilians and militants were killed in the attack.

Our correspondent says there are frequent attacks in the area.

In a separate incident on Sunday, a suicide bomber killed at least 21 people, many of them children, in a market in the Deh Rawud district of Uruzgan province.

Not really. These forward operating bases are pretty much self-sustaining and on their own, much like the calvary days of old in the old west. The positive side is it is easy to call in air support, but it will take time.

The story we haven’t heard is how many guys our guys attrited. That is the real story. This is the fighting season anyway. Poppy season is winding down, not much else to do except plan attacks on FOBs. This one attack might have had a little more success than others but it doesn’t mean the sky is falling.

don’t read a whole lot into it. In all honesty, when have we really lost a lot of troops in afghanistan, other than the specop helo that was shot down?

let them go. I’d give them the keys. better to confront them on the battle field than against a UN court appointed attorney in Hague.

“US Suffers Heavy Afghan Losses (Reports of 8 or 9 killed in Kunar Province Attack)”

I feel for the families of each and every one of these heroes. That being said, how did we enter a world where 8 or 9 KIA is “heavy losses?” BBC would’ve wet their panties on Omaha Beach.

Cue idiot lefties stating “Afghanistan is un-winnable and it’s all Bush’s fault!”

The problem is the lefties have kind of boxed themselves in with Afghanistan. They've been mouthing support for the Afghan "good war" so as to appear credible when they attack Bush's "bad war" in Iraq (and some liberals truly do see Afghanistan as a legit response to 911 where Iraq was a step too far). This should make it tougher for them to do the defeatnik thing with Afghanistan. It'll be very interesting to see how the left reacts to an intensifying effort in Afghanistan as Iraq continues to improve. Obama the other day was talking up the need get the troops out of Iraq *in order to move them to Afghanistan*, which is a new angle from him. I wonder if the left will buy that.

I didn’t like the “at your own risk” comment. (Why does Yahoo do that?)

Sounds like the fighting was heavy. It also sounds like our Soldiers gave as good as they got, if not more so. Also, the OEF causality list has been updated. There are still, tragically, nine US Soldiers (Names not released yet) listed but they have lessened the NATO entries from two to one.

I don't know why they do that,,,

The time factor maybe,,,

That was a Hell a of a Fight alright,,,

Moozzi did his very best to over-run that unit,,,

They usually hit at midnite or so with all they have then

run away before dawn,,,

This one was different,,,

Desperation maybe...

no, i don’t think so. they’ll just use it as fodder for why we supposedly need to get out of Iraq.

I think they actually will. I live in a liberal area, and nearly all the libs I talk to support the mission in Afghanistan.

I guess that’s a good thing, since it means we won’t tuck tail and retreat from there, at least.

With all due respect to our brave, fallen soldiers...8 or 9 is not “heavy casualties.”

I really hate the media.

Heavy Losses?

A major push against the Taliban is being under way. Some times our men are killed.

God bless our men and women; pray for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our nation free.

“Time to march in to rural Pakistan and eradicate the enemy in their nest. No safe havens, no respite, no quarter.”

maybe you wanna tell W that huh?
too many here say they support the troops but go along with this limited warfare crap.
This is turning into a political war with PR from both sides
fitting very well - wag the dog anyone?
I post often that allowing sancutary states makes a joke of our war efforts, and is causing the American public to loose support for the war.
Remember Shock and Awe?
Remember the Powell doctrine of use of overwhelming force which most here on FR agreed to?
can we now turn our backs on those lessons from Viet Nam?
Disgusted with the conduct of the war these last 4 yrs.
War of attrition ala WWI and Nam, disgusting. May those brave men who serve and die today rest well, let us hope it was not in vain. May todays Politicians roast in hell.

In engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last several years, I’ve been thinking about the ratio of U.S. KIA to Opposition KIA. It seems that the average has been about 1 : 10, and so I think about each engagement in comparison to that ratio.

This engagement seems to have been particularly worse, with a 1 : 5 KIA ratio. That’s not good. (No U.S. KIA is ‘good’ of course, but I’m speaking of stats, not individuals).

So what happened here to cause a particularly bad outcome? It’s well worth an investigation. When we exceed 1 : 10 (i.e. 1:20 or better) I just chalk it up to a very good day! When its less than 1 : 10, one ought to be concerned and review the engagement carefully to avoid that circumstance in the future.

Those are heavy casualties for a single day of fighting. God bless our troops and give us the wisdom to keep things in perspective.

agreed...not to diminish the sacrifice of our warriors, [may God bless and keep them and their families] but the headline speaks volumes to the insanity of socialism in the west these days...

However if these weenies were honest, they wouldnt bat an eye if the numbers were x100 or even x1000 on any given 'day'...

just blatant coddling of terrorists and defeatism...

**** em all

LFOD..
