It only takes a week or ten days to travel by ship from Hawaii to Vancouver and sailing was probable cheaper than flying back in 1961. The probably allowed infants aboard too.

By 1961, except for ferries, people in the U.S. were not using ships as a means of transportation. Flying was cheaper and faster, even then in the olden days of 1961.
