Terror threat to Games: China shuts mosques

BEIJING: Chinese authorities have replaced top police and security officials in the Muslim-dominated Xinjiang province, which is the hotbed of separatism and political violence. They have also closed down 41 "illegal" places of worship.

These places of worship were used as training ground for conducting a "holy war", Chen Zhuangwei Chen, the police chief of Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang province, said. Xinjiang, which borders central Asia and Pakistan, has been the scene of a pro-independence movement by a section of the eight million Uighurs living there for a long time.

The authorities also announced they have detained 82 "suspected terrorists" in the past six months in view of fears that they might disrupt the Olympic Games. They belong to five groups that "allegedly plotted sabotage against the Beijing Olympics", the official Xinhua news agency quoted the police chief in Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital, as saying.

The government has annouced the replacement of army and security officials in the ranks of three deputy core commanders, political commissars and the head of the Communist Party organisation department in the army. The replacement suggests that the central government has been unhappy about the inability of local officials to put down the surging separatist movement in the province.

The new head of the organisation department is Liu Xiang Song, the government announced. One of the three new core commanders is Hanabati Sabukhaya, an officer from the Kazak race. Xinjiang borders Kazakisthan and several other countries including Pakistan and Russia. "From now, all police officers must act urgently, get involved once more in Olympic security, to make sure large and small incidents alike do not happen," Chen was quoted by official media as saying.

Sounds like a crackdown in Xinjiang. Why now? Have there been incidents which have gone unreported?

Looks like the officials have fallen victim to those nasty exaggerated rumors about Islamics being a people prone to mischief and mayhem.

In China, holding a christian gathering at your home is an “illegal place of worship”.

The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets, the believers our soldiers.

What will CCIR (Council of Chinese Islamic Relations) say about that? /sarcasm

I love the word “Crackdown”. It sounds so negative and puts the Islamic loons in such a good light.

Is it possible that China has this one right?

“Muslim-dominated Xinjiang province, which is the hotbed of separatism and political violence” If you looks at recent and past history wherever they are it's a hotbed for violence and separatism.

Yes, unfortunately, but our gov't doesn't get it yet. China has a bigger problem, though, as there are a lot more muslims all over China than in the US. You see their outposts (not mosques, but restaurants with Arabic on the sign) all over the place. Chinese currency even has Arabic on it.

More Chinese mayhem. Why trust Communist China? Since they are responsible for killing more Americans post WWII than any other country combined, either coming over the hills in Korea or aiding, abetting and supporting the NVA?

Well, my point is we are going to have to take our collective heads out of our collective sands and realize that Islam is not interested in Western idealism. No matter how many military personnel you use. Here is my prediction to prove my point. As soon as we leave Iraq, the PM will turn to his “brethren”.

No thanks. I’ve seen enough of that culture in Saudi and the Gulf region.

Another interesting thing about the Chinese muslims. When any are attacked by non-muslims (it’s China, who is at fault can go either way...), the muslims get on cell phones and call their brethren from neighboring towns and villages. They then swarm in and beat and intimidate the locals.
