Sniffer dogs were yesterday sent into a Second World War Nazi bunker as the Jersey sex abuse probe was widened.
Six former children's home residents have told police they were taken to the underground complex then sexually assaulted by staff.
One witness, Pamela, said children were taken there as a treat but returned silent and withdrawn.
She said: "One child or a group would be told they were going out for the day as a reward for doing something. It always seemed strange. Staff would say it was a very exciting place. People I knew would be taken off there and other places but they'd always be different afterwards. They'd look traumatised and were never the same." Advertisement Click here to find out more!
Deputy police chief Lenny Harper said: "We have an allegation of serious sexual crimes having taken place in the bunker."
Forensic experts are still examining 65 milk teeth and 30 charred human bone fragments found in cellars beneath Haut de la Garenne.
The bunker, below a watchtower used by the occupying Germans during the Second World War, is 500 yards from the former orphanage. Mr Harper said there was evidence children had been violated there.
He said: "If there's any evidence there, we will find it. There are a number of different entrances to the bunker and we will work through them. We don't know what we are going to find."
Mr Harper fears children died at the home in the 1970s or 1980s.
Shackles and a bloodstained bath are among the 1,100 exhibits taken from the site.
Mr Harper added: "It's still not a murder inquiry because we are still awaiting the definitive dating and examinations on bones and teeth."
Eighteen suspects are being quizzed. Gordon Wateridge, 76, is charged with indecent assault. Claude Donnelly, 68, faces rape and sex assault charges on a girl of 12.
Michael Aubin, 45, is charged with sex offences against boys. All the children lived at the home.
That’s Jersey, not New Jersey, for FReepers who may think there is only one “Jersey.”
French is the official language there.
As Obammy would say, “Mercy Boocoop!”
At one time French was the business language of Jersey, but but beginning in the 20th Century and through today, English is the predominant language. Given that Jersey is part of Great Britain, it seems unlikely, to say the least, that the British would allow French to be the official language of the place.

Which exit? :-)
There are some threads where jokes are appropriate. A thread about rape and torture is one where it is not. Take care FRiend.
