Barack Obama to be granted JFK moment with Brandenburg Gate speech
Telegraph UK.com ^ | 08/07/2008 | Harry de Quetteville in Berlin

Only US presidents have been given the honour of speaking in front of the 18th Century gate, whose chariot of victory overlooked the Berlin Wall and the ecstatic party that followed its destruction in 1989.

Angela Merkel's office this week made it clear that Mr Obama would be welcome in Berlin, but no more or less than his rival Senator McCain.

"The mayor would be delighted to have Mr Obama take advantage of speaking at the Brandenburg Gate to spread his message," said the mayor's spokesman.

There goes the prestige of speaking at the Brandenburg Gate. For the Mayor to allow this, as he seems to have done so, he diminishes the memories of Kennedy and Reagan speeches. He cow-tows to the liberal Obamamasiah, and in so doing, makes himself look like a fool.

I think this is a great idea. Even the MSM will not be able to make this empty suit look like Reagan or Kennedy. Especially when he asks for the wall to be put back up!

I can’t wait to see his torch-wielding followers march into the shape of his logo.

He may grab a JFK moment there, but he will NEVER grab a Ronald Reagan moment at the wall.

Roanld Reagan created his own moment, Barack Obama's moment will be based on his marxist ideology that has already been consigned to the ash and rubbage heap of history.

But he's doing his darndest to resurrect it right here.

It's not quite the same thing now that the Soviets are gone.

What kind of challenge could Obama make in the speech?

"Mayor Wowereit, save me a place in the hot tub!"

A more appropriate German venue for Obama’s speech would be Hitler’s beer hall in Munich.

Berlin’s openly homosexual Mayor Wowereit (quote:”I’m gay and that’s good!”) probably wants to launch his personal investigation on the Larry Sinclair matter.

Wasn’t JFK’s “Ich bin eich Berliner” speech translated to actually mean “I want a jelly donut”?

In Obama’s case, he IS a jelly donut. All gooey on the inside.

Urban legend. He said “Ich bin ein Berliner.” It means “I am a citizen of Berlin.”

Allowing the candidate to speak there is absurd and the Mayor should be taken to task by the people of Berlin. He is making a real clymer of himself, imho. Barak does not deserve this kind of reverence, and by providing it, the Mayor diminishes the speeches by PRESIDENTs past.

Merkle should not meet with Obama as a result, now that would be a fitting response to the Mayor.

“Ich bin ein Berliner” and loosely translated “I am a Berliner.”
Unfortunately, for Obama, there is no West Berlin any more, so I wonder what impact he could have ?

Actually, he said "Ich bin ein Berliner!", which does mean that he was calling himself a "Berliner" jelly donut, due to a nuance in the German language.

If he had said it correctly, in that he was a fellow citizen of Berliners, then he should have said, "Ich bin Berliner!"

I translated for four years in Germany. Kennedy was correct.

“Ich bin ein Berliner!” and “Ich bin Berliner!” are both correct for saying “I am a citizen of Berlin!”, while the first is contextually better. However it can be also said in reference to the jelly donuts, while the second can’t.
