Colombian Hostage Rescue to be Turned Into Movie

BOGOTA, COLUMBIA - THE daring rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages will be made into a movie by a Colombian director, a Hollywood production company and RCN-TV, the television channel said on Sunday.

'They still have to choose a language for the script ... (and) whether the film will be shot in Colombia or France,' an RCN News said in a report.

It said the film will be directed by Colombia's Simon Brand and produced 'jointly by a Hollywood production company and under RCN-Cine supervision.'

The report did not say when the shooting might start.

A former presidential candidate with dual Franch-Colombian citizenship, Betancourt, 46, was rescued on Wednesday along with three Americans and 11 other hostages in a bloodless military operation that tricked rebel FARC guerrillas into thinking their captives were being transferred to another rebel camp.

In a plot worthy of a Hollywood adventure, Colombian soldiers took acting lessons and then disguised themselves as guerrillas to trick the rebels into boarding a helicopter with their captives, all while fake reporters' cameras were rolling.

After she was flown to France to meet with relatives, Betancourt said in an interview published in France Sunday that she planned to write a play about her six-year hostage ordeal.

Brand is well known in Colombian for his 2007 Paraiso Travel and for his 2005 British film Unknown. He has also done musical videos featuring stars including Shakira and Enrique Iglesias. -- AFP

Funny this story just popped up. I just saw another pretty fabulous POW raid set in the Phillipines during WWII. Called the "The Great Raid." Worth a watch. True story, as well.

Nice handle, by the way

Betancourt is a political “progressive” down there... which is why CNN is devoting so much time to her and so little to the others who also suffered. Her first campaign distributed condoms (preservativos), with the motto that she would be like a condom against corruption. The south of Bogota supported her, thanks partially to the name recognition from her mother, who helped her campaign.

She was elected to the Chamber of Representatives in 1994 and launched a political party, the Green Oxygen Party.

Will it include duplicitous Republican politicians secretly dealing with FARC opposing their own country’s interests? Oh, wait, those were the Dems doing that. I guess they won’t be in the movie.

whether the film will be shot in Colombia or France

They're so indistinguishable.

I notice that none of the Hollywood studios have gone for this, only a tiny independent that no one has ever heard of. The studios are too busy makng Che Guevara biographies.

Here is how Hollywood will "fix" the script.

1) The kidnappers are skin-heads from Idaho
2) The rescuers are Hugo Chavez and Nutmenajob
3) One of the hostages is a hot head American white male who gets himself killed due to his arrogance.
4) The American President (Boosh) is shown to be responsible for the conditions that led to the kidnapping.
5) Ellen DeGenerate plays Bennicourt
6) William Defoe plays the arrogant dead american
7) Bobo the chimp plays the American President.

She is nothing but a spoiled dilettante.

Got more than she bargained for but then I have read that she gave birth to a baby that is now three years old. Fathered by one of the terrorists.

Do you have a source on that? I know Betancourt's aide, also a prisoner, gave birth to a child who was taken away from her but ended up in a Bogota orphanage. Betancourt isn't talking for now about whether she was raped.
