Blocked anti-Obama blogs spur Google probe

Does Google Inc. violate the same "neutrality" principles that it wants mandated for Internet providers like Comcast Corp.?

That's the argument being made by some who accuse the search behemoth of hypocrisy when it comes to free speech on the Internet.

Here's the deal: Mountain View, Calif.-based Google recently drew the ire of several authors of anti-Obama blogs, hosted on the company's Blogger platform, whose posting rights were temporarily suspended after Google identified as them "potential spam blogs."

"You will not be able to publish posts to your blog until we review your site and confirm that it is not a spam blog ... Sincerely, the Blogger Team," Google said in an e-mail to the owner of Come a Long Way, one of at least seven blogs that were shut down. The affected blogs are all opposed to the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, Illinois Democrat, and have a common association with the anti-Obama Web site JustSayNoDeal.com.

The suspension lasted five days in the case of comealongway.blogspot.com, according a post on the author's new site at comealongway.wordpress.com. Several of the affected bloggers told Simon Owens of Bloggasm.com that they suspect supporters of Mr. Obama used Google's "flag" function to report them as spam.

The company is looking into what happened but thinks the blogs were accidentally identified by spam detection software, Google spokesman Adam Kovacevich said.

"It appears that our anti-spam filters caused some Blogger accounts to be blocked from creating new posts," he said. "While we are still investigating, we believe this may have been caused by mass spam e-mails mentioning the 'Just Say No Deal' network of blogs, which in turn caused our system to classify the blog addresses mentioned in the e-mails as spam.

Yeah, Google didn't engage in pro-Obama censorship. It was just a spam software filtering glitch. Nothing to see here and its time to move on!

Marxists/Democrats/Stalinists know instinctively that they cannot compete head-to-head in the arena of ideas and rational debate.

You'd think that this might give them a pause to consider their hysterical "book burning" mentality.

You'd think that sometime, somehow one of them might ask WHY MUST POLITICAL OPPOSITION ALWAYS BE SUPPRESSED AND RIDICULED?

Similarly, if the Google "progressives" and Marxist sides were soooo good, why can't they win fair debates? Why can't the opposing, Capitalist/free market side even be presented? Why the hate speech if someone merely disagrees?

You'd think...

this happened to AntiMullah. And usually happens on a weekend when management is not at work.

There is a way of “complaining” on Google Blogs about a blog by simply clicking on a link at the blog and saying it is a SPAM site and not a real person operating it.

This usually happens when no management is there to take care of it and although you can still post, you have to put in verification letters like posting comments on some sites.

In the case of AntiMullah, it was possibly one of their techies that was pro-Mullah and facilitated this. When management returned on Monday they restored the situation to normal.

Yep. Some tech is doing this, but not enough to get caught and disciplined for it. It’s not Google, it’s just a few isolated a-holes that work there.

I moved my Half-Baked Sourdough blog from Google's Blogspot to Worpress last week, myself. Google was simply too intrusive, and has been, for some time. The move was easy.

If you want to create an anti-Obama or pro-conservative blog, do not host it anywhere like Blogger or any "free" blogging site. Spend the money and purchase the hosting yourself.

It appears that our anti-spam filters caused some Blogger accounts to be blocked from creating new posts

(dropping a little curtsey) Thank you, sir! It’s been online for three years, since I got back to Alaska. I’m pleased that you like it.
