"We'll never forget how he battled, especially during those
first lonely years, to protect our liberties, preserve our family
values and keep America strong. There he was, standing
day after day to a government Goliath, crying out like a
voice in the wilderness. Bit by bit, he became more than a
lonely crusader. He grew into a lionhearted leader of a
great and growing army." --Ronald Reagan, 1983
Rest in Peace, Senator.
Perhaps an ominous omen.. that this American patriot and defender of life and liberty ends his days on Independence Day.
Truly the greatest Senator in the 20th century and a political hero. Prayers for Mr. Helms and his family.
Truly a great hero and leader. G-d rest his valiant soul.
Thank you, Senator Helms, for all you have done for NC and our country. You are a true statesman in every sense of the word and we'll miss you. May God bless you and your family.
Jesse Was a damn good patriotic American.
You know a man is good when the left media hates him so much it gets their goat.
Rest in peace Jesse.
Some conservatives lament that we don’t have a hundred stalwarts like Helms in congress. I don’t believe it takes a hundred. I believe if we had even one with the outspoken courage of Jesse Helms, it may not turn everything around, but it would surely inspire others to speak out.
We desperately need the sort of leadership that Jesse Helms gave us. I think the country would be amazed at how many would rally around him.
I appreciate very much North Carolinians for consistently supporting him through the years. North Carolinians have ever reason to be proud.
God Bless you, Jesse, you did much for your country.
Rip to you Senator Helms. We can use a lot more like you. Prayers to the good Senator, his family and friends.
God bless Jesse Helms!
Nothing to post...his life speaks for itself.
A giant has passed. RIP, Senator Helms. May God bless you.
We could use someone in the senate with even 1/2 of the foreign policy expertise that Senator Helms had. He was right on NAFTA. He was right on GATT. He was right on China. He was right on communism. We need that voice on the right and it was never replaced when Senator Helms retired.
My first senatorial vote was for Senator Helms, cast in Fetzer Gym at the UNC campus. I think mine was one of nine votes he received...
Sen. Helms will be surely missed. In my mind he was the last great principled Conservative Senator. You always knew *exactly* where Sen. Helms stood on an issue, whether you agreed with him or not. He loved his fellow North Carolinians, and he loved the men and women of the military (and their families!).
Between Helms, Heston, and Buckley, this year has been pretty rough. Three of my heroes gone in six months.
Passed away on the Fourth of July. Fitting end for a truly Great American Patriot! Prayers of comfort for the Helms family.
RIP
Ok, somebody else may have said it, but I am not going to wade through over 200 replies to find out.
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on the 4th of July, and now Jesse. God’s way of saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant”? Yeah, I think so.
Rest now in the bosom of Abraham, Jesse. You were one of the best.
His WHITE HANDS ad drove pro-quota leftists nuts - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIyewCdXMzk
RIP, Senator Helms.
My flag here on the Albemarle is at half staff.
