The National Rifle Association, long feared by Democrats as the most powerful lobby group in US politics, announced that it will spend $40 million during the campaign, $15 million to specifically persuade gun owners to vote against the Democratic party candidate.
The issue of gun rights has been catapulted to the centre of the general election this year, with the Supreme Court last week upholding the second amendment of the Constitution's right to bear arms, and throwing out a ban on handguns in Washington DC.
Mr Obama was careful after that ruling to state his support for gun ownership but he is also a supporter of a ban on semi-automatic weapons, most concealed weapons, and a limit on the number of handguns bought to one a month.
That has incurred the ire of the NRA, which opposes almost all limits on gun owners. The group was also angered by Mr Obama's statement earlier in the campaign that poor people cling to their guns because they are bitter about their economic prospects.
The NRA's Chris Cox said: "Our members understand how bad Barack Obama is on the second amendment. We look forward to showing him 'bitter'.

Boy, I sure do hope the NRA is working to keep Obama out of the White House! If not, what good would paying dues do?
I wonder if liberals comprehend that the Supreme Court’s decision means that we are entitled to carry hand guns for self defense NO MATTER WHAT? IOW, laws against concealed carry would require that a gun owner carry openly. Libs would REALLY have a cow if they saw rednecks with .45 autos cocked and locked on their hips. I imagine the sales of smelling salts would jump dramatically.

I realize that we have that right but Illinois and Wisconsin do not recognize it or allow concealed or open carry in any form and I don't see that being overturned in my life time.

I donate to groups/people I feel are important. FR, NRA and several gun related orginizations and select charities.
When the next SCOTUS nominees come up,I wonder if the Libs and Arlen Spector (I know,redundant)on the Senate Judiciary Committee will be as hot for them to swear to adhere to “Stare Decisis” on SCOTUS rulings that actually confirm the original meaning of the US Constitution as they are for the contrived “rights” to kill the unborn,make CO2 a polutant,keep baby rapists alive and to seize private property in order to create more taxable commercial developements??
This was the result of the Ohio Supreme Court's decision that the Ohio Constitution permitted carrying of weapons, but not of concealed weapons (the Legislature has since allowed concealed carry). Given that Ohioans could carry weapons, the only option was "open carry." Several "open carry" rallies were held. They went a long way toward convincing the Legislature to permit concealed carry.
