Read through a bunch of house editorials in the Jakarta Post recently and they seem oddly distanced from or even sceptical of Obama’s “Muslim connection”. The letters/opinions from readers are even more so.

Yet I’ve seen other material from your neck of the equator asserting or at least hoping for exactly the opposite, that he’s “still a Muslim”.

Thoughts? Which perception is correct from the SE Asia perspective.

I don't think B.O. is a Muslim. I think he is either an atheist or a follower of Nation of Islam, a black separatist group that was founded in Detroit in the 1930s and is now controlled by Louis Farrakhan.

The three main tenants of Nation of Islam are "Allah is God, the white man is the devil and the so called Negroes are the Asiatic Black People, the cream of the planet earth."

Americans believe that Barack Obama has every right to become a Christian as an adult and proclaim his faith in Jesus Christ.

Obama needs to be baptized to exercise this right, and swearing allegiance to the "Black Value System" is hardly proclaiming his faith in Jesus Christ.

Wonder how his “my personal relationship with the Savior, Jesus Christ” would play in the Middle East?

He could discuss false prophets with Qadhafi and friends, and bless them with a scripture reading, verifying Jesus as The Way to eternal life.

"...An Obama victory in the US presidential elections will be disastrous for the war on terrorism and the mere prospects of that becoming a reality have already begun to raise red flags here in Southeast Asia. To say that Obama is popular among Muslims in Southeast Asia would be an understatement. Almost all Indonesians see Barack Hussein Obama as one of their brethren. His childhood in Indonesia, his Muslim heritage, his Muslim name, his black hair and brown eyes, his opposition to the War in Iraq and his sympathy towards the cause of Muslims around the world convinces Indonesians that Obama is one of their own. For Indonesians it is simple, if he walks like a Muslim and talks like a Muslim, then he is a Muslim.

The results from my own empirical research on Obama's popularity over here are disturbing to say the least. Of over 100 Muslims interviewed from both Indonesia and Malaysia who had an opinion in the US presidential election, only two individuals chose Hillary Clinton over Obama.

Not only is Obama popular though, but his popularity transcends the theological divide between the moderates and the extremists and thus provides a focal point of unity for the two groups. It is this "focal point of unity" which has the dangerous potential to inhibit any further attempts to ostracize the extremist elements and as such thwart our efforts at deradicalization. It's one thing to be known as a uniter, it's another when you are uniting the very individuals that we are trying to isolate and ostracize.

To suitably prejudiced Indonesians Obama's pledge to "rid the American mind-set of militarism" substantiates the position of the Islamic militants by rekindling the prophecies of Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. That America is a decadent and vile ogre, bloodied with the guilt of imperialism and inescapably tainted by an anti-Islamic history. It is this symbolically violent imagery that Indonesia's fundamentalist orators will use to radicalize a new contingent of militants from the ranks of Islam's moderates. Individuals who are mesmerized by the phantasmagorical image of one of their own now inhabiting the White House and who will see it as a sign of America's impending submission and our nation's acquiescence to the superiority of Islam.

To put things into perspective, imagine if you will that in 1945 a war-weary America had elected Harry S. Yamamoto as president. An inexperienced and young president who's campaign promise was to "put an end to the war in Pacific" and to let our adversaries know that "we are willing to come to the table". What would be the reaction in Japan?"

It's a perception, but oftentimes, a perception is backed up by the actions and words of the person being talked about.

That overseas perception is not much different from the perception that many Americans have regarding Obama.

It may be true that Obama is indeed a Muslim. But, he and his handlers wouldn't dare allow him to openly talk abut his beliefs. Oftentimes, a person needs to hide the truth and what he stands for, in order to achieve the bigger goals. Lying is an accepted form of communication for the liberals and communists. Obama is clearly a liberal who is much closer to being a communist. When it comes to a communist, the end justifies the means. The end for Obama is the U.S. presidency and the number one leadership position in the free world. To achieve that goal, he has to lie or pretend to be something different from what he really is.

It's entirely possible that, if he does become president, that he could change his official religion while in the White House to Muslim. At that point, it would be too late to do anything about it. The democrats and Muslims all over would be crying religious bias against anyone that would excoriate or attack Obama for "changing" his religion from Christianity to Islam. If Obama were to do that, then it would be the biggest coup for Islam in their entire history. And, it would become an accepted practice to change to Muslim and there would be many people who would do it in support of Obama. It would become popular all over again to name children after Mohamed, and it would also make it popular to change your name to something Islamic.
