"Black National Anthem" causes stir at Hick speech
The Denver Post ^ | 07/01/2008 | Christopher N. Osher

As Denver dignitaries gathered today for Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem.

But that's not what she did.

Instead, Marie performed the song "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," which is also known as the "Black National Anthem."

When she finished, the proceedings moved forward, and few seemed to notice that the Star Spangled Banner was never performed.

One who did notice was Councilman Charlie Brown, and he took to local talk radio Tuesday afternoon to blast the lack of the nation's anthem at the proceedings.

"There's no replacement for the national anthem," Brown said. "They should have sung it."

Brown said Hancock has told talk radio stations he only introduced the singer from prepared remarks handed to him and was unaware that she would not be performing the Star Spangled Banner. Hancock did not immediately return a call seeking comment, nor did Hickenlooper or his staff.

...couldn’t be said to have been “true to our God"

That depends entirely upon whom their god is.

Their level of consistency suggests a couple of possibilities...

The "Black National Anthem" should be:

Glory Glory Hallelujah,
Glory Glory Hallelujah,
Glory Glory Hallelujah,
The Republicans Freed the Slaves

Why does this NOT surprise me. I just hope these respondents remember these things for the next election, AND that Republicans can put a decent candidate up.

She indicts herself.

Kept the lyrics secret (only 3 people, including her, in the mix)...until she sprung it on them.

Oh yes, this was intentional!

I'd rather not have either!!!!....

..it was AS disrespectful and offensive as Rosie's...!!..more so!

This woman set out to sing HER song, her interpretation, that's why she lied (& yes she did lie by allowing them to think she would sing the National Anthem when she never intended to)...

..and that group of cowards sitting/standing there should have reacted accordingly!

2 local paper polls at #44 and #47 on the POS that substituted the "black national anthem" for the Star Spangled Banner at a Denver city council meeting. Article at the links. Thanks to George76 for posting.

FREEP THIS POLL ***PING!*** FRmail me if you want to be added or removed from the Fearless Poll-Freeping Freepers Ping list. And be sure to ping me to any polls that need Freepin', if I miss them. (looks like a medium volume list) (gordongekko909, founder of the pinglist, stays on the list until his ghost signs up for the list)

Cool.

She sang about God at a public event. Gotta love it. Will the ACLU complain? LOL

Personally I would prefer “God Bless America”, but it would not be PC at international events. (It may offend the other Gods) I’ve always found that song to be more stirring than the Star Spangled Banner. The old Kate Smith version would send chills up my spine. It is also and easy song to sing and remember the words, and there are no war like words in it, i.e. Rockets red Glare and Bombs bursting in Air. I believe we are probably the only nation that sings about a war in their national anthem. My second choice would be “America the Beautiful” another song that is easy to sing and easy to remember the words.

I totally agree. His whole directive is stupid and then he’s stupid enough to follow it at an important event. Wonder if Denver will ever have a decent mayor again?

Of course it was totally intentional. Problem with folks in the arts is that they think because they are talented everyone is really interested in their political views.

Are you deliberatly misinterpreting this?....or are you genuinely THAT naive?

It was an in-your-face intentional arrogant bait & switch with a complete disregard for America's National Anthem.

Well, I wasn't there but I didn't get that from the article. The words of the song don't offend me in the least.

Anyway, the song is certainly not about separatism. It actually was written to express patriotism i.e.:

May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.

I think there is a lot of overreaction going on.

I love all the songs you mentioned, too. But I have absolutely no problem singing about war in my national anthem!
