It helped launch the last Democratic president and has pushed and prodded every Democratic candidate since Bill Clinton to adopt its centrist positions on issues from budget discipline to welfare.
But when the Democratic Leadership Council met over the weekend in the shadow of Barack Obama's Chicago headquarters, he didn't bother to stop by.
Is it losing its clout? Its members hope not, sidestepping Obama's refusal to see them and politely urging him to consider their approaches.
"We asked him," said Al From, the founder of the group. "I hope he'll listen to some of the ideas we've talked about."
Obama didn't attend last year's annual meeting of the centrist Democratic group either. The DLC was created in the 1980s to counter the party's liberal wing and was a strong advocate in the 1990s for issues such as welfare revisions and free trade, which Clinton embraced but many liberals denounced.
Obama was in Chicago on Sunday, but he took the day off as the centrist Democrats discussed such topics as energy policy and national security. He traveled to Missouri on Monday to give a speech about patriotism.

this is why, in the end, i don’t think he can win. He is just too far from the political beliefs of the vast majority of the American people.
Of course, what could Obama possibly gain by being seen with people that actually like this country.
DLCers= fake “moderates”. No different from any other ‘rat.
That's because he's a socialist/communist, and he's soooo far to the left of you folks that he sees you as conservatives. Not to worry though, you can vote for John McCain because he's a centrist Democrat.
But despite everything, the Democrats are united behind Obama, while the Republicans are divided. No wonder the Dems are called the evil party and the Republicans are called the stupid party.
Democratic Leadership Council centrists say anything Obama does is fine by them

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama may be the most liberal senator by one group’s scorecard, and the Democratic Leadership Council may be a centrist organization trying to pull the Democratic party away from the left.
But with the smell of victory in the air, no one at the DLC convention in Chicago is quibbling with the presumptive nominee’s positions.
To Obama, these guys may as well be Neocons.
Scanned the article. Did the centrist Democrat John McCain show up?
Last year, both Obama and Hillary, and maybe some other Democratic presidential contenders, skipped the DLC conference. But they all showed up at the Yearly Kos conference, so that showed where their loyalties are.
The truth is, Obama is not a Democrat and the Democrats know it.
Obie didn’t skip it.........he snubbed y’all. Thinks y’all are irrelevant. You gonna take that from the Kenyan visionary?
So much for the ‘fence mending with Hillary’ talk that was going around!
Well sure. Him showing up at a meeting of centrists is like a Freeper showing up at a Code Pink meeting.
That would be a meeting between Joe Lieberman and who else?
Too bad they don’t endorse McCain. Democrats, but good for humor.
First of all, Richardson is a “centrist”? Then my cat is the Queen of Sheba.
Secondly, having smelled some of the Code Pinkos at demonstration, you can be sure that no Freeper will ever show up at one of their meetings unless they have gas masks.
As to your second comment, I have often wondered at peace protests, "Good Lord, how do you get a woman to smell like that?"
boy!
oh arianna scolded him for moving to the center.
she wants him on the “progressive” side.
oh = ol’
or, does it matter?
who cares?
There is that “Yellow Dog” mentality with Democrats.
