Why Running "On the Record" Is Harder Than You Think
Huffington Post ^ | June 29, 2008 | Thomas Lipscomb

The past several weeks have seen charges and countercharges flying over the claimed release of medical records by the current prospective Democrat and GOP candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain.

In the current poisonous political atmosphere, the electorate doesn't know whom to trust. Its growing distrust of conventional "mainstream media" has caused an unprecedented meltdown in circulation and network news viewership nationwide. And their distaste for the vicious politics of both parties in Congress has driven the level of public approval of the political establishment at every level -- from the press, to candidates, to elected officials -- to all time lows.

To understand how we got ourselves in the middle of an important presidential election with so little information and so much suspicion, we need to review the 2004 election issues that largely revolved around what was, or was not, "on the record" about Kerry and Bush.

Once upon a time, "running on your record", meant that you could say "I oppose gun control -- look at how I voted from 1982-2008: you'll see where I stand."

Nowadays, "running on your record" is really about whether you lied about what you did the the Texas Air National Guard or lied about what you did in Vietnam.

I wish we could talk more about political stances.

Why are all Lipscombs links not active on Huffington Post? That in itself doesn’t look good.

Links work fine here.

Just why HP elected to publish this Lipscomb commentary is certainly curious. Perhaps they’re getting behind demo super-progressive Ed O’Reilly’s campaign to dump Kerry?

What a FINE idea.

Thanks. The link in my original post to the HuffPo article was blocked by FR policy and I had to use an alternate.

My apologies (if necessary) to FR for the end-run, but this Lipscomb commentary warrants wide dissemination, especially (IMHO) here at FR.

When I clicked the Huffington Post “source” from within FreeRepublic I was instead taken to newsclick. THAT is where the links don’t work. My mistake, I thought I had been taken to the Huffington Post. As for dumping Kerry, it is indeed a FINE idea.

Perhaps an FR moderator might see fit to make an exception to policy and restore the HuffPo link in my original post?

Thanks
