He is incredibly compassionate.
He is incredibly reticent when faced with making decisions.
And as a result, his handling of the Deborah Edgerly affair was an incredible disaster.
That's pretty much how Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums' aides, past aides, city department heads, politicos and longtime friends explained his apparent inability to deal with Edgerly after it came to light that the city administrator had possibly injected herself into a police investigation of her nephew.
"You have to understand, he's never fired anyone - that's not his style," said one friend who has worked with Dellums since his days as a congressman.
"He always had other people who took care of that kind of thing."
The Edgerly matter was bungled from the get-go, with staffers pushing for her to go on administrative leave immediately, but Dellums making every effort to give her every break possible - and the city administrator upping the ante at every turn.
It wasn't until Edgerly pushed Dellums beyond his seemingly endless patience by refusing to give up control of the Police Department that he told her to write a letter putting herself on administrative leave - or he would.
And even then she balked, telling the mayor late Thursday that she couldn't write the letter until she met with her lawyer on Sunday.
Even then, Dellums said OK.
But by Friday morning, the mayor apparently had changed his mind.
He told his staff to draft the administrative leave letter so he could deliver it himself to Edgerly, whose office is across the hall from his.
Once the letter was ready, however, Edgerly was nowhere to be found.
..it was just another example of both his tendency to overanalyze everything and his instinct to defend those under attack.
"And I think he genuinely came to think of Edgerly as the underdog in this case,"

Typical liberal. The buck stops.... over there. What a coward.
The news media, so far, has not pointed this out.
That explains his career in Gubmint. Nobody gets fired.
I’ve lived in Oakland. I cannot imagine that corruption would damage any politician in Oakland. It is one of the most corrupt cities in America.
Brilliant.
Hey, Imus...get this lady on your show.
When liberals screw up, it's a "bungle."
Dellums: “This is not the Edgerly I used to know.” Sorry, error, wrong bungler, that’s Obama’s line.
I don’t think I have ever seen such a dishonest spin put on corruption.
Why is old radical Dellums the mayor of Oakland? Perhaps that question answers itself.
It was either Dellums or Ignacio De La Fuente,a labor boss with an aggravating way of making enemies with his arrogance and authoritarian manner.
LOL - my first thought when I opened this thread.
What would Imus ask?
