'I would never take 'trust me' for an answer, not even in the best of times. Not even from a president on Mount Rushmore." So declared Sen. Christopher J. Dodd last week on the floor of the U.S. Senate during a debate on government surveillance.
Dodd declared he will not trust our leaders unless he gets to see certain national security documents. Dodd insists, however, that we trust him when he says he didn't know he received special treatment when he borrowed nearly $800,000 from Countrywide Financial Corp. in 2003.
Dodd continues to refuse to release the standard documents (commitment letters, good-faith estimates of costs and fee summaries) that accompany every residential mortgage. They might confirm Dodd's contention that he received the same deal that anyone shopping the rates could have secured in the spring of 2003. Or maybe they won't.
He said Tuesday he would release documents "at some point." More than two weeks after the public learned Dodd received "VIP treatment" from Countrywide, he doesn't think we're at that crucial point.
Connecticut's senior senator engaged in more disingenuous maneuvering Tuesday, telling reporters the details of his mortgages were already public records. But the mortgage deeds on the land records in Washington, D.C., and East Haddam don't tell critical aspects of the Dodds' odyssey with Countrywide in its heyday.
Dodd knows those publicly recorded documents do not reveal the details of his storied life on "Angelo's List," the hit parade of the powerful who Angelo Mozilo, head of Countrywide, took care of when they needed to borrow money.
The documents Dodd won't release might explain how he got a reduction in interest rates and fees.

Will the spineless Republicans let the Liberals get away with this too?
You don't understand. If the Republicans make trouble for Dodd over this, other Democrats might stop being their friends.
I’m sure this sort of corruption is across the board so it’s highly doubtful anything meaningful will done about it.
Wouldn't want to lose those cocktail party and dinner invites by stirring things up!
Dudd AND CONrad need to be INVESTIGATED by the FBI!!
Of course the spineless repubs will allow Dodd to get away with this. In fact, republicans would be advocating the resignation of any fellow republican who had engaged in this sort of corruption. Dems are far too smart for that sort of useless and stupid show of “good faith.” Willie Jefferson is still comfortably in office, along with his 100,000 in cold cash!!
There will be no action because in today's US Senate there is no morality left.
Then why does Dodd and those other POS in Congress keep referring to each other as "Honorable"?
Dodd should know all about trusting people as his late father, a former US Senator from CT, was censured by the Senate. If you can’t trust your own father, I guess you can’t trust anybody.
Why give a guilty man a fair trial? Dodd and Conrad should be fired and have their estates confiscated to repay the tax payers, and all Country Wide customers should demand VIP treatment.
Don’t forget the GOP let Sandy Berger get away with stealing documents that compromised our National Security.
Seems like our elected Congress is a big Frat Party and we just send the kids our monthly check.
“Trust Me. . “, eh? Reminds me of an OLD joke. . .
