MASSIVE WTC COST OVERRUNS LOOK 'GRIM'

ALBANY - New Yorkers will be told the "grim truth" Monday about new delays and cost overruns at the World Trade Center redevelopment site by Port Authority executive director Christopher Ward, state officials and real-estate industry sources said yesterday.
Ward, in what one source called "the coming grim truth," is expected to outline for Gov. Paterson and the PA more than 20 major problem areas facing the $16 billion redevelopment efforts, including massive cost overruns and unrealistic construction timetables.
At least one project, the much-heralded but costly Santiago Calatrava-designed transit center, may not get built.
The futuristic $2.2 billion transit hub, which is two years behind schedule, was $1 billion over budget when the project's cost was capped at $2.5 billion recently.
Paterson is expected to take the next two months to review Ward's findings before recommending sweeping changes in the redevelopment plan just after Labor Day, sources said.
Paterson earlier this month directed Ward to prepare a comprehensive and candid status report on the project - most of which is now slated to be completed by 2012.
Sources said Paterson, who took office in March, has been "shocked" at how poorly the project's planning and construction efforts had been handled under Govs. George Pataki and Eliot Spitzer.
The Trade Center site has been plagued with problems in recent years as construction projects have moved along at a snail's pace in some cases.

If that piss-poor design never gets built, I won’t shed a tear. Rebuild the old towers and add a floor.
Send the bill to the Bin Laden family — they could pay for it out of petty cash.
That’s the sanme thing my mother in law said — and you’re both righ!
A nice park will do with the names of everyone killed written into a wall like the Viet Nam memorial....Keep it simple. Big expensive ideas don’t pay respect to those killed.
They should have given it to Trump to build...they NEVER, EVER learn. Because they don’t want to...too many people at this trough.
Seeems like WTC will never be built
And no respect for a nation that needs to heal. Only for the almighty dollar.
I'm as much of a capitalist as anyone. But there is a higher calling at times. Obviously, those in power will never see that.
Bloomberg isn't the worst mayor ever, but he's only one step above Dinkins.
Maybe they should write to their senator requesting managerial expertise... hasn’t this been Hillary’s terroritory the past few years?
yep. Build the same towers back. the design was already done. The Pentagon was restored, why not the towers?
Penn & Teller did a great exposé on this on their BS show.
Looks like the sheep are getting tired of their status. There are a billion and a half Chinese, and maybe a few tens of millions of party apparatchiks.
Ah yes. Another government run clusterflop.
These idiots couldn’t set up a mobile home.
Just rebuild the bloody towers.
Dinkins wasn’t the worst. John Lindsay was the worst. A million people fled NYC thanks to that liberal termite.
In terms of 20th century New York politicians, nobody was nerarly as bad as Mr. Fun City in terms of turning a Tourneau into a Canal Street Special. Dinkins was an incompetant hack a la Vincent Impelliteri (unlike Robert Wagner who was a COMPETANT Dem machine hack) whose term happened to coincide with the second half of the crack epidemic. Lindsey, however, started with a livable city, and turned it into the “ungovernable city.”
The greatest threat to our country is not terrorists but bureaucrats.
Dinkins probably spent more time out at the tennis courts of Forest Hills than in his office.
Where has all that money gone? Are any of the Sopranos involved in any of the contracts?
I like your idea of a park with some sort of tasteful monument. I don’t understand the idea of building a new tower as if nothing heppened. And to really annoy the politically correct Marxists and the Islamists, the park should have a cross in the middle of it — they should retrieve those girders from the ruins that formed the shape of a cross. You might recall seeing pictures of these girders that had fallen in to shape of a cross and the workers (many of whom lost friends in the attack) considered the cross to be a memorial. And that instantly became controversial. I remember at the time that our tolerant leftists were outraged that people were using the cross as an informal memorial — they mostly were not outraged by the 9/11 attacks but they were in a frothing rage that people were using a cross as a memorial.
