Party politics of holding children's parties in Sweden
The Times ^ | 6/28/2008 | Markus Oscarsson and Roger Boyes

It was supposed to be a party with balloons and a birthday cake but the eight-year-old Swedish boy had not reckoned on his country’s obsession with equality and inclusiveness. Two of his classmates were left off the invitation list – and that, deemed his school – was forbidden and a violation of their rights in the strictest “nanny state” in Europe.

The case has been sent to the Swedish parliament and has sparked a national debate about individual liberty. Does a child have the right to invite anyone he wants to a party, even if he risks hurting the feelings of those who were left out?

These issues are taken seriously in a society that has a very active Children’s Ombudsman and which encourages children to voice their complaints about school and society. Sweden is the best place in the world to grow up, according to the Save the Children Fund’s 2008 index. So much so, apparently, that adults and school managers have been put on the defensive.

The Swedish pressure group Children’s Rights in Society publicised recently 1,895 complaints by children about the way their parents used the household computer to access pornographic websites or sex chatlines. The Government is now looking into the problem.

Lena Nyberg, the Children’s Ombudsman, is waging a campaign against collective punishment in schools too. Children have been complaining to her about the way that entire classes are kept behind after hours to punish an offence committed by a single pupil. “Adults at work would never accept being punished for something which a colleague is guilty of,” Ms Nyberg said.

So if you go to a bar in Sweden does one those stewardess blonde gals gotta go home with you or else face a discrimination suit or what?

And yes I have known a second generation swedish stewardess in my lifetime (but not in the biblical sense).

Been to a Euro vacation 3 years ago and Stockholm was a close second to Denmark when it comes to hot chicks. I know they’re the home of Abba and Ace of Base (LOL) but I definitely recommend it.

The Swedish government regulates who goes to an 8 year old’s birthday?

You genuinely have to be kidding me.

This is a democrat/socialist/marxist/liberal dream come true.

Uhmmm, doesn't this happen all the time to adults at work when someone screws up and the team has to work together overtime to fix the screw up?

“....even if he risks hurting the feelings of those who were left out?”

So much of what the left pushes is based on feelings. Not because it is right, but because it resonates with certain groups.

The fact is that no one is responsible for your feelings except you. Only you can control your feelings.

The problem is the groups who won’t make the effort to control their own feelings, emotions, desires, libidos, (fill in the blank)....

Of course I won’t mention any names.

Coming to the U.S. very soon if the conservatives truly fail to win enough political clout on November 4. Conservatives have already lost the Presidential race, so will they also see the next Congress become a super-majority of socialists? Help!

No matter who wins the Presidential election it will only be a matter of: Can we remodel or will we have to completely rebuild.

“Children have been complaining to her about the way that entire classes are kept behind after hours to punish an offence committed by a single pupil.”

As bizarre as this story is overall, the kids are right about that one. What could be the leftist thinking, er, leftist feeling behind such a punishment? I guess that they are some sort of collective and responsible for each other’s good and bad behavior. Treat them as a group and not as individuals.

Well, that sounds funny the way it is phrased, but when I looked at the article, it sounds like what actually happened is the boy was just not allowed to pass invitations out to his friends in class. My children go to a private Christian school and they are not allowed to give out invitations to their friends during school either because it is not polite. We mail them to their friends houses. It sounds like this boy’s parents are the ones making a big fuss over nothing.

“One of the children had not invited my son to his own birthday party,” explained the father of the boy, who lodged an official complaint with the parliamentary ombudsman. “The other one had been bad to my son for six months. You do not invite your antagonists.”

and there it is...

That happened at my son’s school in GA. Yes, GA in the USA.
They had a little girl in the class who was terribly disruptive so instead of dealing with her one on one they assigned her to a “team”, who was supposed to influence her behavior. Everytime the girl acted up the “team” was checked on a roster the teacher kept. A certain number of checks meant goodbye to Fun Friday activities for the “team”.
The hope of the educators was that peer pressure would moderate her behavior. Mind you these were 4th graders.

My son, who was considered a model student, was on the “team”. I went ballsistic! I scheduled a meeting with the teacher, the principal and the counselor and I read them the riot act. Personal responsibility, my son is responsible for his behavior not Chantal’s, etc. How could they expect other children to control Chantal’s behavior when Chantal made no effort at self control. Group punishment did nothing for group solidarity and cohesion. Well behaved children who were punished for the bad behavior of another grew resentful and angry toward that student. The kids in the class HATED Chantal. I won the battle. The teams were dissolved. The next year we moved to NC, even worse schools here so we began to homeschool.

“Well behaved children who were punished for the bad behavior of another grew resentful and angry toward that student.”

And, who are the mis-educated ‘teachers’ who think these insane ideas could have any positive result? Where do they get these guaranteed to fail ideas? I’m afraid schools of “education” will be the answer.

The slightest understanding of human behavior, not to mention the slightest amount of common sense, would enable anyone to predict the outcome of these half-witted methods with 100% accuracy.
