Chip Johnson: Dellums disappoints { Deborah Edgerly keeps her job}
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 6/27/8 | Chip Johnson

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums has shown little in the way of leadership since taking office in 2007, but at least he could follow the advice of the experts he has surrounded himself with.

He didn't even do that much this week when he ignored their recommendations to remove City Administrator Deborah Edgerly, who is under investigation for possibly intervening in a police probe of a violent street gang.

Against the better wisdom of his own staff and legal advice from the city attorney's office, Dellums chose to allow Edgerly, 56, to work in City Hall for another month until her scheduled retirement July 31.

His move to allow business as usual is already paying negative dividends.

Edgerly is refusing to sign a document drawn up by the city attorney's office to remove her control over the Police Department and the mayor's office has so far done nothing.

She seems to be the one calling all the shots, and has asked for a generous severance package in addition to her retirement benefits.

I can't imagine Dellums denying her request, because it would involve making a tough decision that might disappoint her, and that isn't in keeping with our mayor's compassionate nature.

Any place that elected Dellums is asking for it! It is no surprise when bad things happen.

Wherever democrats govern, crime, corruption, cover-ups, malfeasance, and other nefarious happenings are sure to manifest themselves.

You can take that to the bank.

Oakland provides a preview of what the whole country will be like under an Obama administration.

The USA is a huge place. It will take some time for the Country to be degraded to a point like Oakland, but it will begin to degrade.

I am amazed to read this kind of article in the SF Chronicle. I'd expect them to run interference for any Democrat politician - no matter the level of malfeasance. Particularly a Castro-loving icon like Mr. Dellums.

Good for Chip Johnson.
